13 july 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Lindsey Graham, a longtime Republican senator from South Carolina, died at the age of 71 from an aortic dissection caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to preliminary findings released by the District of Columbia Medical Examiner through his office. Officials said the findings are preliminary, with the final death certificate pending toxicological and microscopic examinations.
Graham’s office had earlier announced that he died following a “brief and sudden illness.” The subsequent medical report identified an aortic dissection—a life-threatening tear in the inner wall of the body’s main artery (the aorta)—as the preliminary cause of death.
Medical Findings
According to the preliminary examination, the aortic dissection was linked to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, a condition in which the arteries become hardened and narrowed over time. Medical experts note that an aortic dissection is a medical emergency that can cause severe internal bleeding and is often fatal if not treated immediately.
Long Political Career
Graham served in the U.S. Senate since 2003 after previously serving in the House of Representatives. Over more than three decades in Congress, he became a prominent voice on national security, foreign policy, and judicial nominations. In recent years, he was one of President Donald Trump’s closest allies in the Senate.
