Punjab Government Takes Significant Steps in Urban Infrastructure and Cleanliness in 2024

Urban Development, Sewerage, Water Supply, and Cleanliness Initiatives Launched

Under the leadership of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government has made significant strides in improving urban infrastructure and public services for the state’s residents in 2024. A major focus has been placed on enhancing sewerage treatment, water supply, solid waste management, and overall urban development.

To address the growing demands of urban populations, the government has expanded the state’s sewage treatment capacity to 2634.15 MLD (Million Liters per Day), an increase of 492.15 MLD. The total capacity now stands at 2142 MLD, with 52 new Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) under construction, adding 607 MLD capacity. These projects, worth Rs. 650 Crore, are expected to be completed within the next 1-2 years, significantly enhancing the state’s sewerage system.

In support of urban development, the Punjab Government allocated Rs. 450 Crore to urban local bodies (ULBs) for large-scale infrastructure projects aimed at modernizing urban spaces, improving civic amenities, and raising the quality of life for residents.

The government has also launched major surface water supply projects in key cities, reducing reliance on groundwater. Projects in Amritsar (440 MLD), Jalandhar (275 MLD), and Patiala (115 MLD) are underway, with the Ludhiana Water Supply Project (580 MLD) set to commence soon. Additionally, 87 towns across Punjab are being equipped with surface water supply systems to ensure sustainable water availability. Pilot projects for 24/7 water supply have been introduced in Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Jalandhar.

In line with the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), the Punjab Government has allocated Rs. 401.73 Crore for sanitation and cleanliness initiatives. This funding will support the purchase of solid waste management machinery, the construction of waste processing facilities, and the disposal of legacy waste. Additionally, 730 sewer cleaning machines valued at Rs. 39.55 Crore are being procured to enhance sanitation efforts.

Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh highlighted that 2024 is a transformative year for urban infrastructure in Punjab. Through improvements in sewerage systems, enhanced water supply networks, robust infrastructure development, and a strong commitment to cleanliness, the Punjab Government is working towards a sustainable and prosperous future for its citizens.

These initiatives reflect the government’s dedication to providing world-class civic services, creating a cleaner environment, and ensuring a better quality of life for all its residents.
