Punjab to Launch 66 Solar Plants

Punjab Government Targets 66 Solar Power Plants to Strengthen Renewable Energy Sector

Clean Energy Initiative – Solar Plants, Investment, and Jobs to Reduce Fossil Fuel Dependence

Under the leadership of the Punjab Government, an ambitious clean energy project is underway to establish 66 solar power plants across the state. These plants, each with a 4 MW capacity, will collectively contribute 264 MW of renewable energy to Punjab’s power grid by December 2025, significantly enhancing the state’s clean energy infrastructure.

Energy Minister Aman Arora recently handed over a Letter of Award (LoA) to M/s. V.P. Solar Generations Pvt. Ltd., which was selected through a competitive bidding process to set up these grid-connected solar plants at the 66-KV substations of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL). The Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) has approved a tariff of ₹2.38 per kWh for the solar power, which will be sold to PSPCL under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for 25 years.

Once completed, the solar plants will generate around 400 million units of electricity annually, playing a vital role in meeting Punjab’s renewable energy targets. Additionally, the plants are expected to help reduce the state’s agricultural subsidy bill by ₹176 crore annually. The project will also contribute significantly to fulfilling Punjab’s Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) under the Distributed Energy Component.

The initiative is expected to attract an investment of ₹1,056 crore, creating thousands of job opportunities in the renewable energy sector. Minister Aman Arora emphasized the importance of efficient execution and urged PEDA officials to ensure the smooth implementation of the project. This major step will not only reduce carbon emissions but also align Punjab with sustainable development goals, making the state a leader in clean energy production and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
