Canada November 28, 2024 (Punjab Khabarnama Bureau)- Immigrants dreaming of permanent residency in Canada, especially Punjabis, are facing another setback. The last remaining route for PR through Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIA) is being shut down. Immigration Minister Marc Miller has confirmed that the federal government is considering ending the 50 additional points available for PR through LMIA due to widespread misuse. Currently, applicants can earn 50 points for an LMIA or up to 200 points for managerial positions under the Express Entry system. However, this system is being exploited, with people being charged up to $70,000 for fraudulent LMIA certificates.
As a result, the Canadian government is tightening immigration regulations. The CRS score for Canadian PR is now over 500, with LMIA points playing a significant role, but fraud has been rampant. In addition, Canada has already stopped issuing 10-year multiple-entry visas and is now mostly providing single-entry visas. The number of student visas issued has also been reduced to 437,000. Marc Miller advised students not to come to Canada with the expectation of easily securing PR.
