30 july 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Team Bharat, a consumer advocacy group, has urged the government and oil marketing companies to ensure the widespread availability of E10 petrol and make E0 petrol available at reasonable prices, citing growing public concerns over the rollout of E20 fuel.
The demand comes amid increasing criticism from vehicle owners who claim that higher ethanol-blended fuel may not be suitable for all vehicles, particularly older models.
Concerns Over E20 Fuel
E20 petrol contains 20% ethanol blended with 80% petrol and has been introduced as part of India’s strategy to reduce crude oil imports and promote cleaner energy.
However, some motorists have expressed concerns about fuel efficiency, engine compatibility and maintenance costs for vehicles not specifically designed to run on E20.
Demand for More Fuel Choices
Team Bharat has called for:
- Wider availability of E10 petrol across fuel stations.
- Affordable pricing for E0 (ethanol-free) petrol.
- Greater transparency regarding vehicle compatibility with different fuel blends.
- Clear consumer information to help motorists make informed choices.
Balancing Energy Goals and Consumer Needs
The group said it supports India’s long-term clean energy objectives but believes consumers should have access to fuel options that match their vehicle specifications.
It argued that offering multiple fuel choices would help ease concerns while the country transitions toward higher ethanol blends.
Government’s Ethanol Push
The Centre has been promoting ethanol blending to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower emissions and support domestic sugarcane and biofuel industries.
Officials maintain that E20-compatible vehicles are being introduced gradually, with manufacturers adapting future models to the higher ethanol blend.

The discussion around E20 has sparked debate among consumers, automobile experts and policymakers over the pace of implementation and the need to protect owners of existing vehicles.
