14 Aug 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Singapore’s Indian-origin opposition politician Pritam Singh has been struck off the country’s roll of advocates and solicitors following his conviction for giving false evidence to a parliamentary Committee of Privileges.
Why Was Pritam Singh Struck Off?
Singh, who is the chief of Singapore’s Workers’ Party, was convicted in February 2025 on two counts of wilfully giving false answers during the investigation into former MP Raeesah Khan’s false statement in Parliament. He was fined S$7,000 on each count.
His conviction was later upheld by Singapore’s High Court, after which the Law Society initiated disciplinary proceedings against him as a lawyer.
What Happened in the Raeesah Khan Case?
The controversy began after Raeesah Khan admitted that she had lied in Parliament about an alleged sexual-assault experience.
A parliamentary Committee of Privileges investigated the matter and examined whether Singh had encouraged or guided Khan to maintain the falsehood.
Singapore’s High Court later upheld Singh’s conviction for lying to the committee.
What Does ‘Struck Off’ Mean?
Being struck off the roll means Singh is removed from the register of lawyers and can no longer practise as an advocate and solicitor in Singapore.
The disciplinary action concerns his professional status as a lawyer and is separate from his position as an elected Member of Parliament.
Does He Lose His MP Seat?
No. Singh retained his parliamentary seat because Singapore’s constitutional disqualification threshold is based on a fine of at least S$10,000 for a single offence, or imprisonment of at least one year.
His two fines were S$7,000 each, so they did not individually reach the threshold.
He Was Also Removed as Leader of Opposition
Singh’s political position was separately affected.
Singapore’s Parliament passed a motion in January 2026 saying his conviction and conduct made him unsuitable to continue as Leader of the Opposition. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong subsequently ended his designation as Leader of the Opposition with effect from January 15, 2026.
What Happens to His Political Career?
Despite the controversies, Singh remains an elected MP and continues to lead the Workers’ Party.
The latest disciplinary action therefore represents a major professional setback, but it does not automatically remove him from Parliament.
