18 Aug 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  : US President Donald Trump has cited India’s electoral system and voter identification rules while renewing his push for Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, a proposed law that would impose stricter voting requirements in federal elections.

Trump Points to India’s Voter ID System

In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to an alleged recent interaction between his administration and India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Trump said Kumar had questioned how elections in the United States could be conducted without a valid photo identification requirement. However, the specific exchange described by Trump has not been independently corroborated by a confirmed public record.

What Trump Said About India

Trump highlighted India’s 2024 general election, saying around 646 million people voted and that less than 1% used postal ballots.

He also said every voter was required to have a valid photo identity document, using India’s system as an example in his argument for stricter voter identification rules in the US.

What Is the SAVE America Act?

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act seeks to introduce stricter requirements for federal elections in the United States.

The proposal would require voters to provide proof of US citizenship when registering, establish a nationwide voter-ID requirement and place tighter restrictions on voting by mail.

Trump has repeatedly argued that the measures are necessary to strengthen election security and prevent voting by people who are not eligible.

India Becomes Part of US Election Debate

Trump’s comments have placed India’s election-management system at the centre of an ongoing American political debate over voter identification, citizenship verification and mail-in voting.

The comparison comes as the Trump administration continues to pressure Congress to advance the legislation.

US Ambassador Backs Trump

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also backed Trump’s remarks, saying India had required identification for its hundreds of millions of voters and urging Congress to pass the SAVE America Act.

Debate Over Voting Access

Supporters of the legislation say stricter identification and citizenship requirements would strengthen election integrity.

Critics argue that additional documentation requirements could create barriers for eligible voters who do not readily have the required documents, particularly among disadvantaged groups.
