30 july 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : When it comes to recovering from dehydration caused by heat, exercise or illness, not all drinks hydrate the body equally. While ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution), coconut water and energy drinks are all popular choices, health experts say each serves a different purpose.
ORS: The Best Choice for Dehydration
ORS is specially formulated with the right balance of water, glucose and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium to replace fluids lost through diarrhoea, vomiting or excessive sweating.
Doctors recommend ORS as the most effective solution for treating dehydration, especially during illness.
Coconut Water: A Natural Hydration Option
Coconut water contains natural electrolytes, particularly potassium, along with small amounts of sodium, magnesium and carbohydrates.
It can be a good option for mild dehydration or after light to moderate physical activity. However, it contains less sodium than ORS and may not adequately replace fluids lost during severe dehydration.
Energy Drinks: Not Designed for Rehydration
Despite their name, energy drinks are primarily designed to provide a temporary boost in alertness through caffeine, sugar and stimulants.
They are not intended for rehydration and may actually worsen dehydration in some situations because caffeine can increase fluid loss in sensitive individuals.
Which Drink Should You Choose?
For diarrhoea, vomiting or significant dehydration, ORS remains the best choice.
For everyday hydration or recovery after light exercise, coconut water can be a healthy alternative.
Energy drinks should not be used to treat dehydration and are best consumed only occasionally, if at all.
Stay Hydrated the Right Way
Experts advise drinking enough plain water throughout the day and choosing beverages based on the body’s needs rather than marketing claims.
If dehydration is severe or symptoms persist, medical attention should be sought promptly.
