Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, March 13 (Punjab Khabarnama): During the World Glaucoma (cataract) week, where examination and treatment camps are being conducted in government health institutions of the district, people are also being made aware. Giving this information, Executive Civil Surgeon Dr. Renu Singh said that this week is being celebrated from March 10 to March 16. He said that glaucoma can happen to anyone. It is a hereditary disease. If someone in the family has glaucoma, the child is also more likely to develop this disease and after the age of 40, the chances of developing glaucoma are higher. Elaborating about this disease, he said that our eye is like a balloon filled with fluid. This eye fluid is constantly building up in and out of the eye. When there is a problem in the process of production and exit of fluid, the pressure in the eyes increases. The increased pressure on the eyes damages these cells and the eyesight gradually starts to weaken. These can be symptoms of black cataracts. If not detected in time, the person may also become blind.Dr. Renu Singh said that if the eyes feel heavy, pain in the eye or head after a full day’s work, red eyes and having to change the number of glasses repeatedly, then these can be symptoms of glaucoma or black cataract. If this happens, the doctor should be contacted immediately because the adverse effects of black cataract can be avoided by getting a timely examination. He said that if black cataract is not treated at the right time, blindness can also occur or vision can decrease significantly. He said that eye examination should be done at least once in six months. It is worth mentioning that drugs are used to treat glaucoma. If medications are not effective, laser or surgery may be needed to reduce the increased pressure in the eyes. He said that black cataract can be detected only after an eye examination. All government health institutions provide free examination and treatment for this disease.
