29 September 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited Amritsar and paid obeisance at the Golden Temple, bringing Sikh-American community concerns and India-US ties in Punjab into focus.
Gor, leading a 28-member American delegation, also met SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami and acting Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj during his visit.
Gor Returns to Golden Temple
This was Gor’s second visit to the Golden Temple.
He recalled visiting the shrine with his parents around 15 years ago and wrote in the visitor’s book that he was “thrilled” to return.
Meetings With Sikh Leaders
Gor held discussions with Sikh representatives on issues concerning the Sikh community in the United States.
The talks covered concerns affecting Sikh and Punjabi families, including immigration-related issues and community safety.
SGPC Raises Concerns
During a closed-door meeting, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami raised concerns over a recent US Department of Homeland Security poster that used the word “Singh” in what the SGPC described as a derogatory manner.
Dhami said the poster was removed following the organisation’s objection and urged US authorities to prevent similar incidents.
Punjabi Diaspora Issues Discussed
Sikh leaders also highlighted concerns affecting the wider Punjabi diaspora in the United States.
The discussions included immigration enforcement and the contribution of Sikhs and Punjabis to American society.
Gor Visits Amritsar Heritage Sites
The US ambassador’s itinerary also included Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum.
At the Partition Museum, Gor listened to oral accounts and viewed material documenting the Partition of India.
Longstanding Sikh-US Connections
Sikh leaders highlighted the historical and contemporary links between Sikhs, Punjabis and the United States.
The community has a substantial presence in the US, contributing to sectors ranging from business and transport to professional services and public life.
