23 September 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  : S&P Global Ratings has raised its forecast for India’s real GDP growth in fiscal year 2026-27 (FY27) to 7%, up from its earlier projection of 6.6%.

The ratings agency cited stronger industrial activity, resilient domestic consumption and continued government investment as factors supporting the improved outlook.

Industrial Activity Supports Growth

S&P Global’s revised forecast comes as economic activity in India has shown signs of resilience.

Stronger industrial performance has supported the broader growth outlook, even as parts of the global economy continue to face uncertainty from geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions and volatile commodity prices.

Domestic Consumption Remains Important

Healthy domestic consumption is another factor behind the upward revision.

India’s large domestic market continues to provide support to economic activity, helping offset some weakness from external demand and global uncertainties.

The agency’s assessment suggests that domestic demand remains an important source of resilience for India’s economy.

Government Investment Adds Support

Significant government investment has also contributed to the more positive growth outlook.

Public spending on infrastructure and other development projects can support construction, manufacturing and related economic activity, providing an additional boost to overall GDP growth.

Inflation and Interest Rates Remain Risks

Despite the stronger growth projection, S&P Global has highlighted potential risks from inflation.

The agency expects the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to raise its policy rate by 25 basis points in response to inflationary pressures, according to the latest report.

Higher interest rates could affect borrowing costs for households and businesses and potentially moderate investment and consumption.

Weather Risks Could Affect Agriculture

Weather conditions remain another potential risk to India’s growth outlook.

S&P Global has warned that weather-related disruptions could affect agricultural production. A weaker agricultural season could influence rural incomes, food prices and consumption.

This makes the monsoon and broader weather conditions important variables for the FY27 outlook.

Global Uncertainty Remains

India’s economy continues to operate against a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty, fluctuating energy prices and changing global monetary-policy conditions.

S&P Global’s broader August outlook noted that global economic conditions remained resilient, although geopolitical risks and commodity-price volatility continued to create uncertainty.

India Remains a Major Growth Economy

The upward revision keeps India’s growth outlook relatively strong compared with many major economies.

However, the forecast remains an estimate rather than a guaranteed outcome. Changes in oil prices, inflation, global trade, domestic demand and weather conditions could affect actual growth during FY27.

Positive Signal for Investors and Businesses

The revised 7% projection provides a more optimistic assessment of India’s economic momentum.

For businesses, stronger projected GDP growth can indicate healthier demand and investment conditions. For policymakers, however, maintaining growth while controlling inflation will remain an important challenge.

Growth Outlook Still Depends on Multiple Factors

The latest forecast reflects S&P Global Ratings’ assessment of available economic data and expected conditions. India’s actual FY27 performance will depend on how domestic consumption, industrial production, government investment, inflation and external conditions evolve.

The agency’s revision therefore represents an improvement in its expectations, while significant economic risks remain.
