2 September 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Ukraine has held a “substantive meeting” with India’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Anjani Kumar, with discussions focusing on bilateral relations and India’s potential role in efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Ukraine’s First Deputy Head of the Office of the President, Sergiy Kyslytsya, said the meeting also included Deputy Head of the Office of the President Oleksii Sobolev. The talks come as India steps up its diplomatic messaging on the need to end the prolonged conflict.
Ukraine Looks to India for a Greater Role
Kyslytsya said the discussions covered prospects for Ukraine-India relations, including New Delhi’s role in international efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war.
The Ukrainian side also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which Modi said the time had come to move from an “endless war” towards an end to the war.

Modi recently urged Putin to end the conflict, stressing the humanitarian cost of continued fighting and India’s support for peaceful efforts.
The message reflects India’s long-standing position that dialogue and diplomacy are essential to resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict while maintaining India’s strategic relationship with Moscow.
Anjani Kumar Recently Began Mission in Ukraine
The meeting comes soon after Anjani Kumar began his diplomatic assignment as India’s Ambassador to Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry had earlier said Kyiv expected India to play a more active role in promoting the restoration of a just and lasting peace. During Kumar’s initial diplomatic engagement, both sides also discussed strengthening political, humanitarian and economic cooperation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy formally accepted Kumar’s credentials on August 18 and briefed him on Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts to end the war, Russia’s intensifying attacks and the country’s preparations for winter.

India maintains close historical and strategic ties with Russia while also maintaining growing relations with Ukraine and Western countries.
