30 June 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : With the Punjab Assembly elections approaching, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has entrusted senior Rajasthan leader Satish Poonia with the responsibility of steering the party’s campaign in the border state. The move reflects the BJP’s strategy of relying on experienced organisational leaders to strengthen its presence in Punjab, where it continues to work on expanding its electoral base.
Poonia, a former Rajasthan BJP president and a recent Rajya Sabha nominee, has earned a reputation within the party as an effective organisation builder. According to party sources, the BJP leadership believes his administrative style, grassroots connect and election management experience make him well-suited to oversee preparations in poll-bound Punjab.
One of the biggest reasons behind the BJP’s confidence in Poonia is his role in the party’s successful campaign in Haryana. After being appointed BJP’s Haryana in-charge in 2024, he was credited with helping the party strengthen its organisational network and maintain social coalition strategies that contributed to its electoral success. Party leaders now hope he can replicate a similar model in neighbouring Punjab.
Punjab presents a different political challenge for the BJP. Unlike many other states, the party has traditionally had limited independent electoral strength and had long depended on its alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal. Since that alliance ended, the BJP has been working to establish itself as a standalone political force while reaching out to farmers, youth, urban voters and Scheduled Caste communities.
According to reports, the BJP leadership has tasked Poonia with strengthening the party’s booth-level organisation, improving coordination among state leaders and preparing a comprehensive electoral roadmap. His assignment includes holding meetings with district units, energising workers and identifying local issues that can shape the party’s campaign.
Political observers believe the appointment also reflects the BJP’s preference for experienced organisational leaders over high-profile campaigners. Poonia is known within the party for his methodical approach and ability to work quietly at the grassroots level rather than relying solely on public rallies.
Another factor behind the decision is Punjab’s geographical and cultural proximity to Rajasthan and Haryana. BJP leaders believe Poonia’s familiarity with north Indian politics and his experience in neighbouring states could help him understand Punjab’s political dynamics more effectively.
The BJP is also expected to focus on expanding its support among first-time voters, urban middle-class families and sections of farmers who may be looking for alternatives ahead of the elections. Strengthening local leadership and building a stronger organisational network remain central to the party’s strategy.
Poonia’s appointment comes as the BJP undertakes a broader organisational restructuring under the party’s national leadership. Reports indicate that he has already been asked to prepare a blueprint for the Punjab unit and begin consultations with senior state leaders before the formal announcement of his appointment.
For the BJP, Punjab remains an important political frontier. While the party faces strong competition from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, the Congress and regional players, it hopes that sustained organisational work over the coming months can improve its electoral prospects.
Whether Satish Poonia can successfully replicate his Haryana model in Punjab remains to be seen. However, his appointment signals that the BJP intends to focus heavily on organisational strengthening rather than relying only on high-voltage campaigning as it prepares for the state’s next Assembly election.
