1 May 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Toyota Motor Corporation is reportedly planning to build three new vehicle assembly plants in Maharashtra, signalling a major expansion of its manufacturing footprint in India.
According to a report by Japan’s Nikkei newspaper, the proposed plants could triple Toyota’s production capacity in India to around 1 million vehicles annually by the 2030s.
The total investment for the project is estimated at about 300 billion yen (around $1.9 billion), reflecting the company’s growing focus on emerging markets like India as growth slows in regions such as the United States and China.
Currently, Toyota operates three manufacturing facilities in southern India. The addition of the Maharashtra plants would double its plant count to six, significantly strengthening its production base.
The new facilities are also expected to support exports in addition to domestic demand, indicating India’s rising importance as a global manufacturing hub for the automaker.
Reports suggest that Toyota may use these plants to produce plug-in hybrid vehicles, aligning with its strategy to expand environmentally friendly mobility solutions.
If the expansion goes ahead, India could become Toyota’s fourth-largest production base globally, after Japan, China, and the United States.
However, Toyota has not officially confirmed the construction plans, stating that it is continuously reviewing its production strategy and investment decisions across regions.
Industry experts view this move as part of a broader trend where global automakers are increasingly investing in India due to its strong growth potential, rising demand, and favourable manufacturing ecosystem.
Summary
Toyota may build three assembly plants in Maharashtra, investing about $1.9 billion to triple India production capacity to 1 million units, boosting exports and making India a key global manufacturing hub.
