29 April 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced that he will meet Droupadi Murmu on May 5 regarding claims of a possible merger involving Members of Parliament from the Aam Aadmi Party with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Addressing the media, Mann strongly dismissed the reports as baseless and politically motivated, asserting that AAP remains united. He said the purpose of the meeting is to formally raise concerns about what he described as attempts to destabilise elected governments through misinformation and alleged political pressure.
The controversy emerged after speculation surfaced about certain AAP MPs possibly aligning with the BJP. While no official confirmation has been provided, the claims have triggered sharp political reactions in Punjab and beyond.
Mann accused opposition forces of trying to create confusion among the public and party workers. He reiterated that the AAP leadership stands firmly together and that there is no question of any merger or defection. According to him, such narratives are aimed at weakening the party’s position ahead of key political developments.
The Chief Minister also indicated that he would present his concerns to the President, seeking intervention to ensure that democratic processes are not undermined. He emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in political functioning.
Leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party have echoed Mann’s stance, calling the reports “fabricated” and urging supporters not to be misled. Party representatives have stated that internal unity remains intact and that there has been no discussion of any merger.
On the other hand, leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party have dismissed the allegations of attempting to engineer defections, terming them as unfounded accusations by AAP. They have maintained that the party is focused on its own organisational growth.
Political analysts note that such claims often surface in the run-up to elections or during periods of heightened political competition. Allegations of defections or mergers can influence public perception and create uncertainty within party ranks.
The meeting scheduled for May 5 is expected to draw attention, as it brings the issue to the highest constitutional office. While the outcome of the meeting remains to be seen, it underscores the seriousness with which the Punjab government is approaching the matter.
The situation also reflects broader trends in Indian politics, where inter-party dynamics and shifting alliances continue to shape the political landscape. Maintaining party cohesion in such an environment can be a significant challenge.
As the date of the meeting approaches, all eyes will be on the developments that follow. Whether the controversy subsides or escalates further will depend on the responses from various stakeholders and the clarity that emerges.
