October 1, 2024: People who have a special love for pets often keep dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals in their homes. Many consider pets as part of their family, providing love, loyalty, and companionship. However, pet owners must pay close attention to their animals’ health, vaccinations, and behavior. In some situations, these pets can pose a serious threat.
To raise awareness about the prevention and vaccination against rabies, the Health, Medical Education, and Family Welfare Department of Jharkhand is organizing a National Rabies Control Program in conjunction with World Rabies Week, which runs until October 4. The Indian Medical Association’s Koderma district unit is also participating in this initiative.
The Only Solution is Prevention
Dr. Namrata Priya, an official with the IMA Koderma, stated to News 18 that rabies is a disease for which prevention is the only solution, as there is no treatment once a person contracts it. According to global survey data, rabies has a 100% mortality rate if contracted.
Animals That Can Transmit Rabies
It is commonly believed that rabies only results from dog bites, but this is not the case. If timely treatment and vaccination are not administered, rabies can also be transmitted through bites or scratches from cats, monkeys, jackals, rats, rabbits, foxes, and bats. Rabies directly attacks the human brain and nervous system. Early symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle aches, nausea, fear of water, behavioral changes, sore throat, and diarrhea.
Reducing Rabies Risk by Washing with Soap
Officials explained that animals can be carriers of rabies. After being bitten or scratched, the injured area should be washed with running water mixed with detergent soap for at least 15-20 minutes. This process can remove rabies viruses present in the animal’s saliva from the wound, reducing the risk of rabies by up to 90%. Afterward, individuals should contact a nearby health center or doctor to get vaccinated against rabies. Pet owners should regularly consult veterinarians to monitor their pets’ behavior and health and ensure they are vaccinated.
