6 November 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Indian-American politician Nithya Raman has defeated incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in the November 3, 2026, mayoral election, marking a major political development in the United States. Raman, a Los Angeles City Council member and urban planner originally from India, is set to become the next mayor of one of America’s largest and most influential cities.
The Associated Press projected Raman as the winner, while Bass formally conceded the election on Thursday, November 5. According to the latest available vote count, Raman secured approximately 52.1 per cent of the votes, compared with 47.9 per cent for Bass. The victory makes Raman the first challenger to defeat a sitting Los Angeles mayor in more than two decades.
The result has attracted considerable attention among Indian-Americans and political observers, as Raman’s victory represents a significant milestone for the South Asian community in American politics.
Nithya Raman Defeats Sitting Mayor Karen Bass
The Los Angeles mayoral contest was closely watched because Karen Bass was seeking another term after serving as mayor since 2022. Raman, who was initially considered a challenger with limited chances, managed to build considerable support during the campaign.
Bass conceded defeat on Thursday after the latest vote count showed Raman maintaining a clear lead. She also congratulated Raman and promised to ensure a smooth transition of power.
In her concession statement, Bass acknowledged the voters’ decision and thanked her supporters, volunteers and political colleagues who had supported her campaign.
Bass made history in 2022 by becoming the first Black woman to serve as mayor of Los Angeles. Before becoming mayor, she served in the US House of Representatives and the California State Assembly.
Raman’s victory is particularly significant because the last time a challenger defeated an incumbent Los Angeles mayor was in 2005, when Antonio Villaraigosa defeated James Hahn.
Who Is Nithya Raman?
Nithya Raman is a 45-year-old Indian-born American politician who has served as a member of the Los Angeles City Council since 2020. She represents Council District 4 and has worked on issues involving housing, homelessness, neighbourhood development and public services.
Born in India, Raman moved to the United States with her family when she was six years old. She later pursued higher education in the country and studied urban planning at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Before entering electoral politics, Raman worked as an urban planner and community organiser. Her professional experience focused on housing, neighbourhood development and challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness.
She also co-founded the SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition, an organisation that works with people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles.
Her political journey gained momentum in 2020 when she challenged and defeated incumbent City Council member David Ryu. Her campaign relied heavily on volunteers and neighbourhood-level outreach.
Since entering the City Council, Raman has become known for her focus on housing affordability, homelessness and improving basic municipal services.
How Raman Entered the Mayoral Race
Raman’s decision to challenge Karen Bass came as a surprise to many political observers. She entered the mayoral contest in February 2026, just hours before the candidate filing deadline.
Interestingly, Raman had supported Bass’s re-election campaign only a few weeks before announcing her own candidacy. Her decision to challenge the incumbent created tensions among several Democratic leaders in Los Angeles, many of whom had already backed Bass.
Despite limited support from prominent political figures, Raman built a campaign around dissatisfaction with the city’s existing conditions. She presented herself as a candidate who wanted to make local government more effective and improve everyday services.
Her campaign slogan, “A City That Works”, focused on practical problems such as damaged roads, broken streetlights, housing shortages and public transportation.
Homelessness and Housing Were Major Election Issues
Homelessness emerged as one of the biggest issues in the Los Angeles mayoral election. The city has struggled with rising housing costs, overcrowded shelters and people living in tents and encampments across several neighbourhoods.
Raman criticised the existing approach to tackling homelessness and promised to introduce a different strategy.
A 2025 homelessness count recorded approximately 44,000 homeless people in Los Angeles, including around 27,000 living without shelter.
Raman has proposed expanding medical outreach teams to work with people living on the streets and helping them move into permanent housing. She has also emphasised the need to increase affordable housing opportunities so that working families can continue living in the city.
During her campaign, she argued that Los Angeles needed a government capable of delivering basic services efficiently rather than allowing everyday infrastructure problems to continue.
She also promised better parks, improved public transportation and safer neighbourhoods.
Why Did Karen Bass Lose the Election?
Karen Bass faced criticism over several issues during her first term. Although her administration highlighted efforts to address homelessness and improve public safety, opponents argued that progress had not been sufficient.
The city’s response to the devastating January 2025 wildfires also became a major political issue.
The Palisades and Eaton fires caused widespread destruction, killing 31 people and destroying more than 16,000 structures. Questions surrounding emergency preparedness and the administration’s handling of the disaster affected public confidence in Bass.
Raman used these concerns to strengthen her campaign message, arguing that Los Angeles needed a change in leadership.
Bass, meanwhile, defended her record and highlighted the work undertaken by her administration on affordable housing, homelessness and neighbourhood safety.
The final election result showed that Raman managed to attract enough support from voters to defeat the sitting mayor.
Support From Young Voters Helped Raman
One of the important factors behind Raman’s victory was her support among younger voters and progressive sections of the electorate.
Election coverage indicated that Raman performed particularly well among younger voters, while Bass maintained comparatively stronger support among older voters.
Raman also received backing from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), along with several progressive organisations and community groups.
Her campaign attracted volunteers who participated in neighbourhood outreach, phone calls and door-to-door campaigning.
Despite receiving support from several community organisations, Raman faced limited backing from prominent Democratic political leaders in Los Angeles. Bass, on the other hand, received endorsements from influential figures, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Nevertheless, Raman managed to overcome the political establishment’s support for Bass and secure victory.
Raman Pays Tribute to Karen Bass After Victory
Following her victory, Raman expressed gratitude to voters and volunteers who supported her campaign.
In her first statement as mayor-elect, she described the victory as an honour and acknowledged Bass’s contribution to Los Angeles over several decades.
She also promised to work for all residents, including those who voted for Bass or did not participate in the election.
Raman said her priorities would include affordable housing, parks, an improved transportation system, public safety and a city government that delivers on its promises.
Bass also committed to supporting a smooth transition of power.
When Will Nithya Raman Become Mayor?
Following the election victory, Raman is expected to take office in December 2026. She will become the 44th mayor of Los Angeles.
Her victory is being viewed as an important moment for Indian-origin representation in American politics. She will also become the first South Asian and Asian American mayor of Los Angeles.
The new mayor will face several major challenges, including homelessness, housing affordability, public safety, infrastructure problems and preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games.
