7 july 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  : U.S. President Donald Trump has departed for Ankara, Turkey, to attend the NATO Summit, where leaders of the 32-member alliance are expected to discuss defence spending, the war in Ukraine, regional security, and the future direction of the transatlantic alliance. The high-profile summit comes at a time of growing geopolitical tensions and renewed debate over NATO’s collective security commitments.

Before participating in the NATO leaders’ meeting, Trump is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The talks are expected to cover defence cooperation, trade, investment, and broader regional issues affecting both countries.

Defence Spending High on Agenda

One of the central themes of the summit will be increasing defence spending among NATO members. Trump has consistently urged European allies to contribute more toward the alliance’s collective defence, arguing that the financial burden should be shared more equally.

NATO leaders are also expected to unveil major defence procurement agreements worth billions of dollars, aimed at strengthening the alliance’s military capabilities in response to evolving security threats.

Ukraine Conflict to Dominate Discussions

The ongoing war in Ukraine will remain a key topic during the summit. NATO members are expected to reaffirm military and financial support for Ukraine while discussing long-term security assistance and future cooperation.

Trump is also expected to hold a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss efforts to end the conflict and explore possible diplomatic initiatives.

Middle East Security Also in Focus

The summit takes place amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent confrontations involving Iran and concerns over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. Leaders are expected to exchange views on regional stability, counterterrorism cooperation, and the implications of recent conflicts for NATO’s security strategy.

Turkey’s Strategic Role

As host nation, Turkey is expected to emphasize its strategic importance within NATO. Discussions between Trump and Erdoğan may also include defence cooperation, regional conflicts, and Turkey’s role in the alliance’s future security architecture.
