20 May 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  : Doctors are warning that rising summer temperatures and intense heatwaves are increasingly causing digestive problems such as acidity, bloating, loose motions, dehydration, and stomach discomfort among people across age groups.

Medical experts say extreme heat affects the body’s digestive system in several ways, making people more vulnerable to gastrointestinal issues during prolonged hot weather. Hospitals and clinics in many regions have reported an increase in patients complaining of stomach-related illnesses during ongoing heatwave conditions.

According to gastroenterologists, one of the main reasons behind digestive discomfort during summer is dehydration. Excessive sweating caused by high temperatures reduces water and electrolyte levels in the body, which can directly affect digestion and gut function.

When the body becomes dehydrated, digestion slows down, increasing the chances of acidity, constipation, bloating, and stomach cramps. At the same time, poor hydration may disturb the balance of healthy bacteria in the intestines, contributing to digestive discomfort.

Doctors explained that heatwaves also increase the risk of food contamination. High temperatures allow bacteria and viruses to multiply rapidly in improperly stored food and water, leading to food poisoning, loose motions, vomiting, and stomach infections.

Street food, uncovered meals, dairy products kept outside refrigeration, and contaminated drinking water become particularly risky during summer months. Health experts advise people to consume freshly prepared food and avoid stale or unhygienic items during extreme heat.

Another important factor is changes in eating habits during summer. Many people consume spicy, oily, fried, or processed foods despite high temperatures, which can worsen acidity and indigestion. Carbonated drinks, excess caffeine, and sugary beverages may also irritate the digestive tract and contribute to dehydration.

Doctors noted that the body naturally diverts more blood flow toward the skin during extreme heat to regulate temperature through sweating. As a result, blood circulation to digestive organs may temporarily reduce, slowing digestive processes and causing discomfort after meals.

Heat stress can also affect appetite and metabolism. Some people skip meals or eat irregularly during very hot weather, which may lead to gastric irritation, acid reflux, and weakness. Others consume large quantities of cold drinks or ice-based foods too quickly, which can disturb digestion.

Children and elderly individuals are considered especially vulnerable to summer-related digestive problems because their bodies are less efficient at maintaining hydration balance. People with pre-existing digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acidity issues, or chronic gastric problems may experience worsening symptoms during heatwaves.

Doctors recommend increasing water intake significantly during hot weather to support proper digestion and prevent dehydration. Coconut water, lemon water, oral rehydration solutions, buttermilk, and fresh fruit juices are often suggested to maintain electrolyte balance.

Nutritionists also advise people to consume lighter meals rich in fruits, vegetables, curd, and fiber during summer. Water-rich foods such as watermelon, cucumber, muskmelon, and oranges help maintain hydration and support gut health.

Experts say maintaining food hygiene becomes extremely important during heatwaves. Cooked food should not be left outside for long periods, and drinking water should come from safe, clean sources. Refrigerated items must be stored properly to avoid bacterial growth.

Doctors further recommend avoiding overeating and reducing consumption of spicy, oily, and heavily processed foods during periods of extreme heat. Instead, smaller and more frequent meals are considered easier for the digestive system to process.

Stress and poor sleep during hot weather may also affect digestion. High temperatures often disturb sleep patterns, and sleep deprivation can influence gut health, acidity levels, and metabolism.

Medical professionals warned that persistent diarrhea, severe vomiting, blood in stools, high fever, or signs of dehydration such as dizziness and confusion should not be ignored. Such symptoms may indicate serious infections or heat-related illness requiring immediate medical attention.

Heatwaves have become more frequent and intense in several parts of India and the world due to changing climate conditions. Public health experts believe rising temperatures are increasingly affecting not only cardiovascular and respiratory health but also digestive wellness.

Doctors stressed that prevention remains the best approach during summer months. Staying hydrated, maintaining hygiene, consuming balanced meals, and avoiding excessive exposure to heat can significantly reduce the risk of digestive complications.

As temperatures continue to rise, healthcare professionals are urging people to pay closer attention to dietary habits and hydration to protect themselves from stomach-related illnesses commonly associated with heatwave conditions.
