October 17, 2025 (Punjab Khabarnama Bureau) : Health authorities in California are monitoring a recent increase in mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) cases, prompting public concern. However, state and federal officials have reassured residents that the overall risk to the public remains low.
According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), several new mpox cases have been identified in multiple counties over the past few weeks. Most infections have occurred among adults with known exposure or within specific social networks, not from widespread community transmission.
Dr. Tomás Aragón, California’s public health director, said in a statement, “We are aware of a slight uptick in cases but want to emphasize that this is not a cause for panic. Vaccination and awareness remain our strongest tools.”
Health officials have encouraged those at higher risk — including people with multiple sexual partners, individuals living with HIV, and those who haven’t been vaccinated — to receive the JYNNEOS vaccine, which offers effective protection against the virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also confirmed that mpox remains rare and controllable when detected early. Common symptoms include fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue, which can develop 5–21 days after exposure.
Local clinics and community health centers have been expanding vaccination drives and public awareness campaigns to ensure at-risk groups are informed about prevention and early testing. Officials have urged the public to practice safe health behaviors, seek medical care promptly if symptoms develop, and avoid close contact with anyone who appears ill.
Dr. Aragón added, “California’s strong health infrastructure allows us to identify and contain cases quickly. People should continue normal activities but stay informed.”
While the rise in mpox cases has drawn attention, experts agree that it’s not comparable to the 2022 outbreak, when thousands of infections were recorded globally. The combination of vaccination coverage, public vigilance, and swift health response has significantly reduced the virus’s spread potential.
For now, California health agencies are focusing on targeted prevention and education efforts to prevent further transmission, emphasizing that mpox is manageable with early detection and care.
Summary
California health officials report a small increase in mpox cases but stress that public risk remains low, citing strong vaccination rates, early detection, and effective containment measures across the state.
