10 october 2024 : A recent study by the University of British Columbia has found a connection between certain dark personality traits and increased sexual desire, as well as higher pornography consumption. The study highlights that narcissism and everyday sadism are particularly linked to these behaviors.

The study focuses on four personality traits known for manipulative and antisocial tendencies:

  1. Narcissism: Characterized by a sense of superiority, a lack of empathy, and a constant need for attention.
  2. Machiavellianism: Involves a tendency to manipulate others for personal gain.
  3. Psychopathy: Associated with a lack of guilt, impulsivity, and antisocial behavior.
  4. Everyday Sadism: Refers to deriving pleasure from causing harm or discomfort to others.

Previous research suggested a link between these traits and sexual behavior, but this study surprisingly found that narcissism and everyday sadism had a stronger influence than psychopathy on sexual drive and pornography use.

The study involved 701 participants from two universities who completed surveys on their personality traits, sexual drive, and pornography consumption. A second phase with 400 participants, including 196 retested after five months, also explored relationship status and its impact on sex drive.

The results showed that narcissism and everyday sadism played significant roles in increasing sex drive and pornography use, while Machiavellianism and psychopathy had little to no effect. Additionally, the study found that men exhibited higher levels of dark personality traits and greater sex drive than women.
