September 25, 2024: Every bottle of alcohol clearly warns that drinking is harmful to health. Despite decades of research highlighting the numerous detrimental effects of alcohol, a recent study from the United States has revealed a concerning new risk for older adults who consume alcohol. According to this study, drinking alcohol significantly increases the risk of cerebral hemorrhage among elderly individuals.
The research, conducted by investigators from the Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University, examined 3,128 individuals over the age of 65 who had suffered head injuries due to falls. Among these, 18.2% were found to be alcohol-dependent, while 6% reported regular alcohol consumption. The results published in the American Journal of Emergency Physician Open indicate that occasional drinkers are twice as likely to experience brain hemorrhages compared to non-drinkers. For those who drink daily, the risk is more than 150% higher.
