9 september 2024 : A doctors’ forum in West Bengal has formally objected to a claim made by Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, which alleged that a patient died due to a lack of treatment at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The forum is demanding a public apology from Banerjee.
In their letter, the Joint Platform of Doctors, West Bengal, criticized Banerjee’s statement as ‘false’ and ‘malicious.’ They clarified that the patient, who had sustained severe injuries in a road accident, was promptly admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at 9:10 am on September 6. The medical team provided continuous care until the patient’s death at 12:30 pm, as confirmed by the provisional death certificate.
The forum refuted Banerjee’s claim that the patient had been left unattended and bleeding for three hours. They argued that such assertions were unfounded and ignored the efforts of the medical staff.
The doctors’ body urged Banerjee to correct his statement swiftly, warning that his potentially harmful claims could have negative effects on the medical community, which is already under strain following the high-profile RG Kar rape and murder case. The case is under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation, and the Supreme Court has also taken notice.
