“Dancing After Eating Leading to Silent Heart Attacks? AIIMS Doctor’s Surprising Answer”
September 2, 2024: Recently, a head constable of Delhi Police suffered a sudden heart attack while dancing at a farewell party, and he passed away before reaching the hospital. Previously, a similar incident occurred in Nainital, where a person collapsed and died of a heart attack while dancing during a mehendi ceremony. Over recent years, such cases have become increasingly common, where individuals succumb to heart attacks while dancing, sitting, walking, or playing sports. Given that dancing is generally considered a healthy exercise, why are there increasing reports of deaths from heart attacks after dancing?
According to Professor Padma Shri Dr. Nitish Naik of the Cardiology Department at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, sudden cardiac arrests have always occurred but were not as widely recognized before. Today, such events are reported more quickly and extensively. However, there are still factors linked to sudden heart attacks that are being identified.
Lifestyle and Stress
Dr. Naik explains that changing lifestyles and increasing stress contribute to these issues. Excessive physical exertion, such as dancing or running, can put sudden pressure on the heart, potentially leading to blood clots or blockages in the heart, thus increasing the risk of a sudden heart attack.
Insulin and Post-Meal Risks
Another factor is that after eating, insulin production increases to convert food into energy. This process requires more oxygen, leading to higher blood pressure, which puts additional strain on the heart. High blood pressure damages the endothelium (the inner lining of blood vessels), increasing the risk of blood clots and heart attacks.
Unknown Heart Conditions
Sometimes, individuals who experience sudden heart attacks may not be aware of their underlying heart conditions. Many people are unaware of their blood pressure, sugar levels, or other heart-related issues. Even when symptoms appear, they are often ignored, leading to severe health crises like sudden heart attacks.
Precautionary Measures
Doctors recommend the following precautions:
- Avoid heavy physical activities, including dancing, for at least half an hour after eating.
- Regularly check blood pressure, sugar levels, and cholesterol to prevent future complications.
- Individuals with existing heart conditions should exercise special caution.
- Improve lifestyle habits, manage stress, and engage in regular physical exercise.
