21 October 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  :  Veteran Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi has received strong support from several prominent members of the Indian music industry after a controversy erupted during his performance at a cultural event in Uttarakhand. Singers Mika Singh, Alisha Chinai, Harshdeep Kaur, rapper Badshah and actor-comedian Kapil Sharma have spoken out in his defence, criticising the way he was confronted on stage.

The incident took place on October 18, 2026, during the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in New Tehri, Tehri Garhwal. Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal interrupted Mehndi’s performance, questioned his ability to sing and alleged that he was performing under the influence of alcohol. A video of the confrontation subsequently circulated widely on social media, triggering debate about the treatment of performers at public events. The allegations have not been independently confirmed.

Mika Singh Defends His Elder Brother

Mika Singh, Daler Mehndi’s younger brother, was among the first artists to respond to the controversy. In a video shared on Instagram, Mika challenged the allegations that Daler had been drinking alcohol and questioned the basis for making such claims.

Mika said his brother had been a major star for three decades and suggested that his condition during the performance could have been related to health issues. He revealed that Daler had recently undergone major surgery, adding that the singer had continued to honour professional commitments despite his health challenges.

According to Mika, performers sometimes agree to appear at events even when they are unwell because they have already made commitments. He also criticised the manner in which his brother was confronted publicly.

Mika’s statement brought attention to the possibility that an artist’s health condition could affect a performance. He urged people not to jump to conclusions without understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Badshah Condemns Public Humiliation

Rapper Badshah also expressed solidarity with Daler Mehndi, emphasising that disappointment with a performance should not lead to the public humiliation of an artist.

In a social media statement, Badshah described Mehndi as a legendary figure who has made significant contributions to the Indian music industry. He argued that artists deserve dignity and respect, particularly when they may be dealing with personal or health-related difficulties.

Badshah’s reaction resonated with the broader debate surrounding the incident, with several people discussing whether the minister could have addressed his concerns privately rather than interrupting the singer in front of an audience.

Harshdeep Kaur and Alisha Chinai Extend Support

Singer Harshdeep Kaur also came out in support of Daler Mehndi, describing him as a legend and suggesting that he appeared unwell during the performance.

Harshdeep noted that Mehndi is known for his energetic stage presence and powerful singing. Her remarks highlighted the contrast between his established reputation as a live performer and the difficulties he appeared to experience during the event.

Alisha Chinai, another prominent singer, criticised the manner in which Mehndi was addressed on stage. She argued that the veteran performer did not need to prove his singing ability or seek validation after decades in the industry.

Chinai also pointed out that backing vocals and prerecorded musical tracks are commonly used in live performances, making it important to understand the technical arrangements before drawing conclusions about an artist’s performance.

Actor-comedian Kapil Sharma shared Mika Singh’s statement and appealed for greater kindness towards others. He also referred to Mehndi’s recent surgery, saying that people may be unaware of the difficulties someone is experiencing behind the scenes.

What Happened at the Uttarakhand Event?

The controversy began when Subodh Uniyal walked onto the stage during Mehndi’s performance at the annual fair in New Tehri. The minister questioned the singer’s ability to perform and alleged that he was intoxicated and unable to sing properly.

Uniyal later defended his intervention, saying the event organisers had paid for the performance and arranged travel and accommodation. He argued that an artist who was not physically fit to perform should not have accepted the commitment.

The minister also questioned whether Mehndi was singing live or using prerecorded tracks. His remarks, captured in a video, became widely discussed online and drew reactions from both supporters and critics.

While the video showed the confrontation, it did not independently establish the allegation that the singer was intoxicated. The incident has therefore prompted competing views about the artist’s condition, the minister’s response and the responsibilities associated with a paid public performance.

Daler Mehndi’s Legacy in Indian Music

Daler Mehndi became one of India’s most recognisable pop stars during the 1990s, helping bring Punjabi pop music to a wider audience.

His energetic singing style, distinctive turbans, colourful outfits and lively music videos made him a prominent figure in the country’s independent music scene. Songs such as Bolo Ta Ra Ra and Tunak Tunak Tun became widely popular and helped establish his place in Indian pop culture.

His influence extended beyond individual hits, contributing to the growing popularity of Punjabi-language music among audiences across India and abroad.

The support expressed by fellow artists reflects the respect he continues to command within the music industry. The controversy has also raised broader questions about how public figures should be treated when their performances fall short of expectations.

Debate Over Respect for Artists Continues

The incident has sparked discussions about professional commitments, public accountability and compassion towards performers who may be facing health challenges.

While event organisers and audiences can reasonably expect artists to fulfil agreed commitments, several musicians have argued that concerns about a performance should be handled respectfully and without unnecessary public confrontation.

The episode also highlights the importance of avoiding unverified allegations, particularly when a person’s health may be a factor.

As reactions continue, Daler Mehndi’s fellow artists have made their position clear: they believe the veteran singer deserves dignity and an opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding his performance.
