12 October 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  : Indian stock markets are heading into Monday’s trading session with cautious optimism after a strong rebound on Friday helped end the Nifty 50’s eight-week losing streak. Traders are now watching whether the benchmark index can sustain itself above the crucial 22,500 mark and whether Bank Nifty can reclaim 55,500 to extend its recovery.

The Nifty 50 gained 288.65 points, or 1.30%, to close at 22,520.45 on October 9, while the BSE Sensex advanced 879.09 points to settle at 72,472.33. Bank Nifty also rose, gaining approximately 1.36% to close at 55,257. The recovery improved market sentiment, although analysts continue to caution that the broader technical structure remains weak.

Nifty 50: 22,500 becomes a crucial level

The immediate focus for traders is whether Nifty 50 can maintain its position above 22,500. The index’s rebound has offered some relief following weeks of sustained selling, but further gains will require stronger buying participation.

According to technical analysts cited by Moneycontrol, immediate resistance is placed at 22,600, followed by the 22,800 zone. A sustained move above 22,800 could open the way towards the psychologically important 23,000 mark.

On the downside, 22,500 is the immediate support level, while the 22,200–22,180 range is an important lower support zone. A decisive break below 22,180 could weaken the recovery and expose the index to the 22,000 level.

Osho Krishan of Angel One noted that the recent rebound followed eight consecutive weeks of selling pressure, which had pushed technical indicators into oversold territory. However, he cautioned that the broader trend remained weak and that a meaningful reversal would require a decisive move above previous swing highs.

Jatin Gedia of Teji Mandi also highlighted the importance of the 22,200–22,400 support cluster, pointing to technical indicators that suggest selling pressure may be easing.

Nifty trading strategy and important levels

For Monday’s session, traders are expected to monitor price action around support and resistance rather than assume that Friday’s rebound marks the beginning of a sustained rally.

The key levels to watch are:

  • Immediate support: 22,500
  • Major support zone: 22,200–22,180
  • Immediate resistance: 22,600
  • Next resistance: 22,800
  • Major upside hurdle: 23,000

A sustained move above 22,600 could strengthen the recovery attempt, with 22,800 emerging as the next important hurdle. A breakout above 22,800 would provide a stronger technical signal for a move towards 23,000.

Conversely, failure to hold 22,500 could increase selling pressure and bring lower support levels into focus.

Osho Krishan identified the 22,200–22,000 region as a crucial support area and suggested that a decisive breakdown could expose the index to 21,750–21,700. These levels underline why traders may remain cautious despite the recent improvement in sentiment.

Bank Nifty: Can the index reclaim 55,500?

Bank Nifty has also shown signs of recovery, but the 55,500–55,600 range remains an important resistance zone. The index closed at approximately 55,257 on Friday, leaving it below the 55,500 threshold that traders are watching.

A sustained move above 55,500 could improve the short-term outlook and open the way towards 56,000–56,200. This area represents a significant resistance zone, where the index could encounter renewed selling pressure.

On the downside, immediate support is located around 55,000, followed by the 54,600–54,400 region. A decisive break below these levels could undermine the recovery.

Technical analyst Jatin Gedia observed that Bank Nifty had shown relative resilience, supported by strength in several major banking stocks. He also pointed to a positive crossover in the MACD momentum indicator as a potential sign of improving momentum.

However, analysts continue to highlight the broader downtrend and the possibility of volatility near key moving averages. A sustained move above resistance would be needed to provide stronger confirmation of recovery

Bank Nifty trading plan

For Bank Nifty, the session’s direction may depend on whether buyers can push the index above 55,500 and sustain those gains.

The important technical levels are:

  • Immediate support: 55,000
  • Next support zone: 54,600–54,400
  • Immediate resistance: 55,500–55,600
  • Next resistance: 56,000–56,200

A sustained breakout above 55,600 could improve the chances of an advance towards 56,000–56,200. On the other hand, rejection near resistance could keep the index within a consolidation range.

Osho Krishan of Angel One has highlighted the 54,500–54,300 region as an important support area and 56,100–56,200 as a stronger resistance zone. Gedia has also identified 54,400–54,200 as crucial support and 56,000–56,200 as the next major hurdle.

Improving sentiment, but risks remain

The rebound in Indian equities comes amid a combination of bargain buying, improved global cues and support from select heavyweight stocks. Strong quarterly earnings from Tata Consultancy Services also helped lift technology shares during Friday’s session.

Market sentiment received another boost on Monday as easing oil prices and new Reserve Bank of India measures to support the rupee improved expectations for the opening session. However, Brent crude remained above $100 per barrel, leaving investors exposed to energy-price volatility and geopolitical uncertainty.

Foreign institutional investor activity, currency movements, corporate earnings and global bond yields will remain important factors for the market. Domestic institutional buying may help absorb some selling pressure, but a sustained recovery will depend on broader participation and improving market conditions.

What should traders watch on October 12?

The central question for the session is whether Friday’s rebound can attract follow-up buying. For Nifty 50, holding above 22,500 and moving beyond 22,600 would strengthen the immediate recovery attempt. For Bank Nifty, a sustained move above 55,500–55,600 would be an important technical development.

If the indices fail to overcome resistance, consolidation or renewed selling cannot be ruled out. Traders should monitor price action around the identified levels and account for volatility rather than treating a single positive session as confirmation of a lasting trend reversal.

Overall, market sentiment has improved, but the technical outlook remains cautious. The Nifty 50’s ability to defend 22,500 and Bank Nifty’s attempt to reclaim 55,500 are likely to remain the key areas of focus during Monday’s trading session.
