30 September 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Three relatives from Gujarat who were attempting to reach the United States through an alleged illegal migration route have reportedly gone missing in Ethiopia, with their families claiming they were kidnapped and demanding government intervention.
The families have reportedly received a ₹1 crore ransom demand for the trio’s release.
Three Relatives Went Missing
The missing individuals have been identified as Ritwik Jansari, Mamta Chavda and Mayuri, all connected to families in Gujarat.
According to reports, the three began their journey from Gujarat on September 20 and travelled through multiple countries while attempting to reach the United States.
Families Approached Police
The families reportedly approached police after losing contact with the three relatives.
According to the complaint, communication stopped after the group reached Ethiopia, while a subsequent call from a person identifying himself as “Khan” allegedly demanded ₹1 crore for their release.
Illegal Migration Route Alleged
The families allegedly paid agents between ₹60 lakh and ₹75 lakh per person for arrangements to reach the US through an illegal route.
The journey reportedly took the three from Gujarat to Rajasthan and Jaipur before they travelled to Abu Dhabi and then Ethiopia.
They Stayed in Addis Ababa
After reaching Addis Ababa, the three reportedly stayed at a GSF camp on Swaziland Street.
Their Ethiopian e-visas were reportedly valid from September 19 to October 19, according to information provided by the families and police.
Family Initially Told They Had Reached Canada
One of the missing relatives reportedly contacted her father on September 22 and said they had reached Canada.
The family later lost contact with the trio and subsequently received the alleged ransom call, raising concerns that the three may have been held against their will in Ethiopia.
Agent’s Role Under Scrutiny
According to the report, the families had dealt with an agent who collected money in instalments and arranged the journey.
The circumstances of the alleged disappearance have prompted questions about illegal migration networks and the risks faced by people attempting to enter the US through unauthorised routes.
Families Seek Government Help
The families are seeking assistance from Indian authorities to locate the missing relatives and secure their safe return.
The identity and whereabouts of the alleged kidnappers remain unclear, while the ransom demand is part of the ongoing investigation.
