22 September 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Japan has issued evacuation advisories to more than 1.6 million people as powerful Typhoon Dujuan brought torrential rain, flooding and landslides to parts of the country, including areas around Tokyo.
The storm disrupted transport and power supplies and prompted authorities to warn residents in vulnerable areas to move to safer locations as heavy rainfall continued.
Two People Killed in Landslides
At least two people have died after landslides triggered by intense rainfall in Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures, according to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK.
One victim, a woman in her 60s, was killed after mud entered her home in Yokosuka, while rescue teams continued searching for people who may have been trapped in affected areas.
More Than 1.6 Million Under Evacuation Advisories
Local authorities issued evacuation advisories covering more than 1.6 million residents, particularly in eastern coastal areas.
Some reports put the number of people affected by evacuation orders and advisories at close to 2 million as the storm moved through the region. Authorities urged residents in landslide- and flood-prone areas to take warnings seriously.
Heavy Rain Raises Flood and Landslide Risks
Typhoon Dujuan dumped extremely heavy rainfall across parts of Japan, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides.
Japan’s weather authorities warned that rainfall could reach unusually high levels, with some areas facing the possibility of receiving rainfall comparable to or exceeding their normal monthly September totals in a short period.
Flights Cancelled Across Japan
The storm also caused major disruption to air travel.
Hundreds of flights were cancelled, while transport services faced delays as heavy rain and strong winds affected airports and railway networks.
Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and check transport updates before leaving home.
Power Supply Disrupted
The severe weather also disrupted electricity supplies.
Tokyo Electric Power Company reported that nearly 50,000 households in the affected region were without power following the storm and associated damage.
Rescue Operations Underway
Emergency services have been deployed in areas affected by flooding and landslides.
Rescue teams are searching damaged homes and clearing roads blocked by mud and debris. Authorities are also assessing infrastructure damage and monitoring rivers and other areas vulnerable to further flooding.
Tokyo Region on High Alert
The typhoon’s proximity to the Tokyo metropolitan region has heightened concerns because of the area’s large population and extensive transport and infrastructure networks.
Residents in low-lying and coastal areas have been urged to follow instructions from local authorities, particularly where evacuation advisories have been issued.
Residents Urged to Remain Cautious
Authorities have warned that danger can continue even after the strongest winds pass.
Saturated ground can trigger landslides later, while swollen rivers and drainage systems can cause flooding as additional rainfall moves through affected areas.
Residents have therefore been advised to remain in safe locations until authorities confirm that conditions have improved.
