14 September 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has taken its Amritsar-450 initiative beyond Punjab, reaching out to political leaders and members of the Punjabi and Sikh diaspora in the United States as part of preparations for Amritsar’s 450th anniversary in 2027.
The university is seeking international participation in a year-long programme aimed not only at celebrating Amritsar’s heritage but also at developing a long-term vision for the city’s future.
Global Outreach for Amritsar-450
GNDU has begun contacting influential US political figures and diaspora communities to build support for the initiative.
The outreach is being coordinated as part of the university’s effort to make the 450th-anniversary programme internationally visible and bring the global Punjabi and Sikh community into discussions about Amritsar’s future.
13-Point Action Agenda
GNDU recently unveiled a 13-point action agenda for the year-long Amritsar-450 programme.
The initiative is being guided by the theme “Remembering the Past • Understanding the Present • Imagining the Future.” It will bring together scholars, citizens, institutions, artists, students, experts and members of the global diaspora.
Amritsar 450 Global Conclave
One of the centrepieces will be the proposed Amritsar 450 Global Conclave, a three-day international gathering at GNDU.
The university plans to invite around 20–25 eminent national and international scholars, historians, urban planners, environmental experts, economists, cultural personalities, administrators, entrepreneurs and diaspora representatives.
Discussions are expected to cover spirituality, heritage conservation, urban development, environment, tourism, economy, crafts and Amritsar’s global identity.
Amritsar 2052 Vision
GNDU also plans to prepare “Amritsar 2052”, a 25-year vision document looking ahead to the city’s 475th anniversary.
Six expert groups are expected to examine areas including heritage conservation, green development, urban planning and mobility, tourism and entrepreneurship, culture and education, Punjabi language, and the city’s global and diaspora connections.
Documentary on Amritsar
Another major component is a proposed 45–60-minute documentary titled Amritsar: A City for the World.
The film will trace Amritsar’s journey from its founding through its transformation, Partition, resilience and present-day challenges, while also examining aspirations for its future.
Punjabi and English versions, along with subtitles, have been proposed, with plans for screenings through universities, Indian missions, diaspora institutions, cultural festivals and digital platforms.
‘450 Voices of Amritsar’
GNDU is also planning an oral-history project called “450 Voices of Amritsar”.
The initiative aims to record around 450 voices from different sections of society, including senior citizens, Partition families, artisans, traders, teachers, women, religious functionaries, industrialists, sanitation workers, neighbourhood communities and diaspora families.
Selected stories could later be developed into short films, podcasts and digital narratives.
Focus on Heritage and Sustainability
The programme will combine cultural commemoration with practical projects.
GNDU’s agenda includes proposed Green & Clean Amritsar demonstration projects focusing on areas such as green cover, waste segregation, plastic reduction, water conservation and biodiversity.
Other initiatives include heritage walks, exhibitions, cultural programmes, a book fair, publication of Amritsar at 450, and traditional literary and musical events.
Diaspora as a Key Stakeholder
The university’s outreach to the US reflects the importance of the Punjabi and Sikh diaspora in the Amritsar-450 programme.
By involving diaspora representatives, GNDU aims to connect Amritsar’s local development and cultural heritage with its international community and strengthen the city’s global identity.
Beyond a Celebration
GNDU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh has positioned the initiative as more than a commemorative exercise.
The university’s stated objective is to use the 450th anniversary as an opportunity to examine Amritsar’s present challenges and develop practical ideas for the city’s next phase of growth.
