9 September 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has pledged to restore and strengthen Washington’s relationship with Colombia, saying the longstanding security partnership between the two countries had been weakened by the previous political leadership.
Rubio made the remarks during a visit to Colombia, where he met President Abelardo de la Espriella and discussed security cooperation, counter-narcotics efforts and closer economic ties.
Rubio Criticises Previous Leadership
Rubio said the US-Colombia security relationship had been “impeded” over the previous three or four years by political leadership in Colombia.
He expressed optimism that the relationship could now be rebuilt under De la Espriella, whose government has taken a more US-aligned approach to security and counter-narcotics policy.
Focus on Countering Drug Trafficking
Security cooperation was a central issue during Rubio’s talks with the Colombian president.
De la Espriella has sought US assistance with drones, radar systems, aircraft, intelligence and other security equipment to strengthen Colombia’s fight against drug-trafficking organisations and armed groups.
The Colombian government has also committed to renewed anti-drug operations, including efforts against coca cultivation and cocaine-processing laboratories.
US Seeks to Rebuild Strategic Partnership
Rubio said Washington wants to build on the historic security relationship with Colombia rather than simply restore previous levels of cooperation.
The two countries are also exploring wider cooperation in areas including trade, energy and critical minerals, reflecting an effort to broaden the relationship beyond counter-narcotics operations.
Colombia Joins US-Led Anti-Crime Coalition
During Rubio’s visit, Colombia’s participation in the US-led Americas Shield coalition against organised crime was highlighted.
The initiative involves greater cooperation on intelligence, law enforcement and efforts to disrupt drug-trafficking networks across the region.
Economic Ties Also on Agenda
Trade was another important part of Rubio’s Latin America tour.
The US is seeking to conclude trade agreements with Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, while Colombia is seeking relief from US tariffs of 12.5% imposed on its products.
The tariff issue has gained additional significance after a major earthquake struck Colombia in August, prompting Bogotá to seek greater economic support from Washington.
A Sharp Policy Shift
The renewed US-Colombia engagement represents a significant shift from the more strained relationship under former president Gustavo Petro, whose left-wing government frequently clashed with Washington over issues including drug policy and regional strategy.
The new administration in Bogotá has adopted a considerably closer relationship with President Donald Trump’s government.
Closer Security Cooperation Expected
Washington has indicated that its support will focus on equipment, intelligence and training rather than deploying US troops to Colombia.
The approach is intended to strengthen Colombian security forces while allowing Bogotá to take the lead in operations against criminal and armed groups.
Broader Regional Strategy
Rubio’s Colombia visit is part of a wider three-country Latin America tour that also includes Ecuador and Peru.
The US secretary of state is seeking stronger partnerships with governments that share Washington’s priorities on migration, organised crime, counternarcotics and economic cooperation.

Rubio’s comments signal Washington’s intention to move past recent disagreements and establish a closer strategic partnership with Colombia.
