Video Deleted After Backlash
Vikram had shared a video on Instagram in which he was seen playing with and hugging the gibbon. The clip was later deleted after questions emerged about the legality of keeping the protected exotic animal in a private setting.
Forest Department Traces Animal’s Journey
Officials are reportedly tracing the gibbon’s movement from Manipur to Erode and eventually Chennai, while examining documents relating to its possession and transfer. The investigation has also widened to the broader issue of exotic wildlife transfers.
Why the Lar Gibbon Is Protected
The lar gibbon (Hylobates lar) is listed under CITES Appendix I, meaning international trade in the species is subject to strict controls. Authorities are checking whether the necessary permissions and documentation were obtained.
One Gibbon Reportedly Died
During the investigation, forest officials reportedly found that one of the gibbons had died and that the death had not been officially reported. The surviving animals were subsequently moved back to Erode.
Vikram Provides Clarification
Vikram has reportedly submitted a written clarification to the Forest Department explaining the circumstances surrounding the video. The probe will determine whether any wildlife regulations were breached.
