14 Aug 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : India’s cricket team is stepping up preparations ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on August 15, with the squad using warm-up matches and training sessions to adapt to local conditions.
Spin Could Be India’s Biggest Weapon
The Galle surface is traditionally considered favourable to spin, and India are weighing the possibility of playing three left-arm spinners — Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Manav Suthar.
Pacers Face Tough Conditions
India’s fast bowlers will also have to deal with Galle’s heat and humidity. Bowling coach Morne Morkel has warned that the Kookaburra ball could lose its hardness after around 25-30 overs, requiring the pace attack to adapt quickly.
The absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who is ruled out with a knee injury, adds another challenge to India’s bowling plans.
Sarfaraz vs Jurel Selection Battle
A major selection decision remains India’s No. 6 batting position, with Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel competing for the spot.
Sarfaraz has returned to the Test squad after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out through injury, adding another layer to the team’s final XI discussions.
Warm-Up Match Boosted Preparation
India also benefited from a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka Cricket XI in their warm-up game. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said the competitive match provided more value than several additional days of conventional practice.
Gill’s Fitness in Focus
Shubman Gill has been progressing from his injury and remains on track for the opening Test, providing a positive update for India’s batting plans.
