5 Aug 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  :  The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified three widely used medicines as carcinogenic or probably carcinogenic, based on evidence from scientific studies. However, health experts have strongly advised patients not to discontinue prescribed treatment without consulting their doctors.

They emphasise that an IARC classification identifies a potential cancer hazard under certain conditions and does not mean the medicine will cause cancer in everyone who uses it.

What Has IARC Classified?

IARC periodically evaluates whether certain substances, occupations or medicines have the potential to cause cancer.

Its classifications are based on the strength of scientific evidence regarding cancer hazard, not the level of risk faced by an individual taking a medicine as prescribed.

Hazard vs Risk

Experts stress the difference between hazard and risk:

  • Hazard refers to whether something can potentially cause cancer.
  • Risk depends on factors such as the dose, duration of exposure, route of administration and an individual’s overall health.

A medicine may be classified as carcinogenic while still offering benefits that significantly outweigh its potential risks when used appropriately.

Why Patients Should Not Stop Medication

Doctors warn that abruptly discontinuing prescribed medicines can be dangerous and may worsen the underlying medical condition.

Patients taking any medicine mentioned in the IARC evaluation should:

  • Continue treatment as prescribed.
  • Discuss concerns with their healthcare provider.
  • Never stop or change medication without medical advice.

Regulatory Review Continues

National drug regulators evaluate medicines based on both safety and therapeutic benefits. IARC’s findings may be considered alongside clinical evidence, but they do not automatically result in medicines being withdrawn from the market.

What Should Patients Do?

Health experts advise patients to rely on guidance from qualified medical professionals rather than social media or unverified reports.

Anyone with concerns about long-term medication use should consult their treating physician to understand the benefits and potential risks.
