16 july 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  :  The National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed stricter measures against medical colleges that do not have the required infrastructure and essential facilities in place. Under the proposed framework, institutions with incomplete infrastructure could be denied approval to admit students or begin new academic programmes.

The move aims to strengthen standards in medical education and ensure that students receive training in institutions equipped with adequate classrooms, laboratories, hospitals, faculty, and clinical facilities.

Focus on Infrastructure Standards

Medical colleges are expected to meet prescribed requirements related to:

  • Academic buildings and classrooms
  • Laboratories
  • Teaching hospitals
  • Clinical training facilities
  • Medical equipment
  • Faculty and support staff
  • Student and patient facilities

The NMC’s proposed approach would make infrastructure readiness a key condition for granting or continuing regulatory approvals.

Crackdown on Deficiencies

The move comes amid concerns over institutions seeking approval despite lacking adequate facilities. The regulator is expected to conduct inspections and assess whether colleges meet the required standards before granting permissions.

Institutions found to have major deficiencies could face restrictions on admissions or other regulatory action.

Aim to Improve Medical Education

The NMC said the objective is to ensure that the expansion of medical education is matched by adequate infrastructure and training facilities. Experts believe stronger enforcement could help improve the quality of medical education and clinical training in India.

The proposed measures are likely to affect colleges seeking new approvals, additional seats, or permission to continue existing programmes.
