Chandigarh, January 9, 2025 (Punjab Khabarnama Bureau): A virus similar to Corona, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), is once again spreading from China. Cases of HMPV are increasing in India and several other countries. People infected with this virus are experiencing symptoms like breathing problems, cold, and cough. It is believed that this virus could be more dangerous for the lungs.

During the COVID era, people experienced several heart-related issues, which has now raised the question: Can HMPV infection also be dangerous for heart health? Let’s find out what experts have to say about it.

Dr. Shatanu Singhal, an interventional cardiologist at Fortis Hospital, Greater Noida, told News18 that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that primarily affects children the most.

In individuals with weakened immunity, HMPV infection can spread rapidly. From a heart health perspective, HMPV infection can also be dangerous. It may cause inflammation of the heart and, in severe cases, lead to heart failure. This virus can be particularly fatal for patients already suffering from heart diseases.

The cardiologist explained that HMPV infection not only affects the respiratory system but also severely impacts the entire body. Our lungs play a crucial role in delivering oxygen to all body organs.

When the lungs are infected, it becomes difficult for individuals to breathe, which also negatively affects the heart. If the infection spreads extensively, it can lead to heart failure. Therefore, people must take special care of their heart health. Those already suffering from heart diseases should make every effort to avoid HMPV infection to prevent any complications.

According to Dr. Shantanu, some symptoms of HMPV are similar to those of COVID-19, but HMPV is not considered as severe as COVID-19. However, preventing it is crucial.

Patients with heart disease or other serious conditions should use masks when stepping outside to protect themselves from HMPV. Wash your hands regularly and avoid crowded places. Take your medication on time and maintain distance from infected individuals. If you notice any symptoms of HMPV, contact a doctor and get tested as soon as possible.

Summary: HMPV shares symptoms with COVID but is less severe. High-risk patients should use masks, avoid crowds, maintain hygiene, take medications, and consult doctors if symptoms appear.
