As of September 26, 2024, mosquito-borne diseases are spreading rapidly across the country, with dengue being particularly prevalent in many states. In the past week alone, more than 300 dengue cases have been reported in the capital, Delhi. Dengue fever is extremely dangerous and, if not treated in time, can even lead to death.

The symptoms of dengue are similar to viral fever, and many people mistakenly take viral fever medications for dengue. However, doing so can be harmful.

Dr. Anil Bansal, former president of the Delhi Medical Association and a senior doctor, explained that dengue is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes. People infected with dengue experience high fever, headaches, body aches, and difficulty breathing.

In dengue patients, platelet counts can drop rapidly. If the platelet count falls too low, it can lead to internal bleeding, which can be fatal. Therefore, if someone shows signs of dengue, they should immediately consult a doctor for treatment.

What to do if you suddenly have a fever: According to doctors, if someone suddenly develops a fever, they should take paracetamol. This medication is considered safe for any type of fever. If the fever persists for 2-3 days despite taking paracetamol, the person should get tested for dengue.

If diagnosed with dengue, self-medication should be avoided, and a doctor’s advice should be sought. Many people start taking antibiotics when diagnosed with dengue, but this can be harmful. Dengue is a viral infection, and antibiotics are not effective against it.

Medications to Avoid in Dengue: Dengue patients should avoid antibiotics, antiviral medications, and painkillers. These three types of medications can cause complications in dengue and may lead to a further drop in platelet count.

Dengue treatment is based on symptoms, and doctors prescribe medications according to the patient’s condition. Mild symptoms of dengue can be managed with paracetamol. Cold water sponging can also help control fever. Sponging involves using a cloth soaked in cold water to wipe the body.

Diet Tips for Dengue: Health experts recommend that dengue patients drink plenty of water and include fluids in their diet. Consuming fruits, porridge, khichdi, or soup is beneficial. Fresh fruit juice can also be consumed. To prevent dengue, it’s crucial to protect against mosquitoes.

Prevent water from accumulating around your home. Regularly keep containers empty and clean, and avoid keeping buckets of water in the bathroom. Use mosquito repellent cream. If dengue symptoms appear, consult a doctor immediately.
