On September 26, 2024, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) released its latest report, revealing that several commonly used medications have failed quality tests.

Among the drugs that failed the tests are popular medications such as paracetamol, calcium, and vitamin D tablets.

Drugs Failing Quality Tests

One of the drugs declared substandard by the CDSCO is Pantocid tablets, used to treat acid reflux. Manufactured by Sun Pharma, this drug was among those that failed the quality check. In addition, calcium and vitamin D tablets did not meet the required standards. Other medications, such as Shelcal and Pulmosil injections, used to treat high blood pressure, also failed the quality tests. Alkem Health Science’s antibiotic Clavam 625 was another drug that did not pass the drug testing process.

CDSCO Released the List

The CDSCO released a list of counterfeit, adulterated, and misbranded drugs, medical devices, vaccines, and cosmetics. Some of the drugs included in the list are Pulmosil (Sildenafil injection), Pantocid (Pantoprazole tablets IP), and Ursocol 300 (Ursodeoxycholic acid tablets from Indian Pharmacopoeia). Ursocol 300, used for treating gallstones and some liver conditions, also failed the quality test. Manufactured by Sun Pharma, this medication is typically used in liver disease treatment. Other drugs, such as Telma H (Telmisartan 40 mg and Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg tablets IP) and Deflazacort tablets (Defacort 6 tablets), also failed the tests.

Additionally, CDSCO has released a list of 48 other drugs that were deemed substandard. The companies responsible for manufacturing these drugs have issued their own statements regarding the matter.
