17 september 2024 : The rise in value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel in Punjab has led bulk diesel consumers, such as transporters and large industries, to source their diesel from neighboring regions like Himachal, Jammu, and Chandigarh. According to information obtained by The Tribune, many oil-marketing companies have begun supplying diesel to dedicated bulk consumer pumps from depots in Himachal and Jammu, allowing these consumers to purchase diesel at prices Rs 5-7 per liter lower than in Punjab.

In response, Punjab’s Finance and Taxation Minister Harpal Cheema is reportedly set to meet with taxation officers to address this issue and prevent further loss of diesel sales to other states. Earlier this month, fuel prices in Punjab rose by 61 paise per liter for petrol and 92 paise for diesel.
