September 4, 2024: Do you often feel helpless without glasses when watching TV or reading a newspaper due to weak vision? This news is just for you. A new eye drop approved in India promises to temporarily restore your vision within 15 minutes. After over two years of deliberation, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved India’s first eye drops aimed at eliminating the need for reading glasses.
On Tuesday, Mumbai-based Entod Pharmaceuticals launched “Presvu” eye drops, made using pilocarpine. This medication treats presbyopia by reducing the size of the pupils in the eyes, helping with close-up vision. Presbyopia is an age-related condition that affects the eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects.
Vision Improvement for Up to 6 Hours
In an interview with News 18, Entod Pharmaceuticals CEO Nikhil K. Masurkar stated that a single drop starts working within just 15 minutes and its effects last for the next six hours. If a second drop is administered within three to six hours of the first, the effects can be extended further. He mentioned, “Until now, there were no drug-based solutions for blurred vision, reading glasses, contact lenses, or surgical interventions.”
Availability and Cost
Entod Pharmaceuticals specializes in medicines for ophthalmology, ENT, and dermatology, and exports to over 60 countries. Starting from the first week of October, these prescription-based drops will be available in pharmacies at a price of ₹350. The medication is intended for people aged 40 to 55 with mild to moderate presbyopia. Masurkar claims this is the first of its kind in India, tested on Indian eyes and adapted based on the genetic profile of the Indian population.
