13 august 2024 : This experience is common to many of us; when we hastily consume hot food or drink hot water, we often end up with burns in our mouths. In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. P. Venkata Krishnan, a senior consultant in Internal Medicine at Artemis Hospitals, explained, “The discomfort typically arises from ingesting something excessively hot, which can scald the sensitive tissues in the mouth, resulting in pain, redness, and occasionally blisters. While the pain usually diminishes within a few days, there are numerous home remedies that can assist in alleviating the discomfort and facilitate quicker healing.” Below are some home remedies to consider for relief:

    Cold water or ice cubes

One of the most effective and straightforward methods to alleviate a burnt mouth is to rinse it with cold water or to suck on ice cubes. Cold water can help diminish swelling and numb the pain, while gently sucking on ice cubes provides prolonged cooling relief, which is particularly beneficial immediately following the burn.

    Yogurt or milk

Dairy products such as yogurt or milk possess a cooling effect that can ease the burning sensation in the mouth. They also form a protective barrier over the affected area, thereby minimizing irritation.

    Honey

Honey serves as a natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent, which can soothe burns and help prevent infection. Applying a small quantity of honey directly to the burnt area can relieve pain and promote healing.

    Aloe vera gel

Aloe vera is well-regarded for its healing properties, particularly for burns. Applying a small amount of aloe vera gel directly to the affected area can cool the burn, reduce inflammation, and encourage faster recovery.

    Saltwater rinse

A saltwater rinse can aid in cleansing the mouth and lowering the risk of infection in the burnt area. To prepare a saltwater rinse, dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gently rinse your mouth with the solution several times throughout the day.
