April 12 (Punjab Khabarnama) : Yes, yes, yes! The internet, indeed, is a one-stop shop for hacks. But as we always say — all of them need to be taken with a pinch of salt, or in this case, ice. So for all of you out there who struggle to boil your eggs, we came across a super cooking hack that is sure you make you fall in love with it.
Shared by Moms Gup Shup on Instagram, the hack includes placing raw eggs on a tawa with ice cubes and covering it with a lid. Unlike the traditional boiling method where eggs are submerged in water, this method aims to boil the cooks with the help of steam.
While many users took to the comment section to express disappointment at the hack, we reached out to clinical dietitian Garima Goyal to understand the benefits of steaming eggs. According to her, it can provide “more consistent cooking results”. “When eggs are steamed, they are surrounded by gentle, evenly distributed heat. This results in eggs that are cooked more evenly, minimising the risk of overcooking or undercooking certain parts of the egg. This consistency is particularly beneficial for achieving the desired level of doneness — whether it’s a soft, medium, or hard-boiled egg,” said Goyal.
Steaming eggs can also help peel them easily. “Many people find that eggs cooked using the steaming method have shells that are easier to remove compared to eggs boiled in water. The gentle heat of the steam may help loosen the membrane between the egg white and the shell, making it easier to peel off without damaging the egg itself. This can be especially helpful when preparing large batches of eggs for dishes like deviled eggs or egg salad,” said Goyal.
Steaming eggs also offers a faster cooking process compared to boiling. While boiling water can take some time to reach the desired temperature, steaming requires only bringing a small amount of water to a boil before placing the eggs in a steamer basket or rack. Goyal shared that this hack can save time, especially when cooking multiple eggs or preparing breakfast in a hurry.
Moreover, according to Goyal, steaming offers a “more energy-efficient method compared to boiling”. “Since steaming requires less water and energy to heat the water to boiling temperature, it can result in lower energy consumption. This can be beneficial to reduce environmental footprint or save on utility bills,” said Goyal.
In terms of flavour and texture, steaming eggs can produce slightly different results compared to boiling. “Some people find that steamed eggs have a softer, creamier texture compared to boiled eggs, which may be preferable depending on personal preference and intended use. However, this difference is subtle and may not be noticeable to everyone,” shared Goyal.
Whether you’re preparing a simple breakfast or a complex dish, steaming eggs are worth considering for their versatility and potential to elevate your cooking game.
