March 14 (Punjab khabarnama): Sunil Gavaskar revealed that he ‘reprimanded’ Yashasvi Jaiswal for his poor start against the West Indies in South Africa during their debut series last August.Yashasvi Jaiswal emerged as the biggest find for India, scoring more than 700 runs in the 4-1 series win against England. Jaiswal, who made a brilliant start to his Test career with a century on debut in August last year, became the first Indian to score 700 or more in a single Test series after the great Sunil Gavaskar. He became the only second Indian batsman to score more runs than that. In fact, the former India captain achieved this distinction twice – in his debut series in 1971 and again in 1978/79 – both times against West Indies, but it took 45 years for Gavaskar to find company at the club, and it was Coming from none other than a 22-year-old who hasn’t even played 10 Test matches yet. However, think about it, Jaiswal’s spectacular feat would almost not have been possible had Gavaskar not intervened during India’s tour of South Africa. Gavaskar, the first batsman to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket, revealed that he had taunted Jaiswal during the Johannesburg Test.Gavaskar, who has always been vocal about the importance of changing starts, poured out his feelings to Jaiswal in the hotel room and as it turned out, it worked wonders as Jaiswal has been an unstoppable force in Tests ever since.
