World, March 12 (Punjab Khabarnama): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors are reportedly considering a tough call regarding Virat Kohli’s inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad. Sources reveal that Kohli “hasn’t been able to cope with the team’s needs in the shortest format,” raising doubts about his place. The final decision may rest with chief selector Ajit Agarkar, as the BCCI top officials prefer not to intervene.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has already confirmed Rohit Sharma as the T20 World Cup captain, but Kohli’s role in T20Is is yet to be discussed. Kohli returned to the T20I side after a 15-month break during the series against Afghanistan, but concerns about his batting style persist. The selectors are skeptical about Kohli’s place, considering the evolving nature of the format and the emergence of young talents.

The report suggests that Kohli’s inclusion will be contingent on a “superlative IPL” performance with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The selectors and team management are prepared to make tough decisions in preparation for the T20 World Cup.

If Kohli is not selected, India has various options, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Ruturaj Gaikwad as Rohit’s opening partner. Players like KL Rahul or Sanju Samson could take the role of the keeper and No.3 batter. Additionally, Suryakumar Yadav, the world’s No.1 T20I batter, could be considered for the crucial No.3 position.

The final decision is expected to be a delicate matter, with chief selector Ajit Agarkar likely to play a pivotal role in shaping the T20 World Cup squad.
