5 November 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Indian domestic cricket has discovered another promising fast-bowling talent in 21-year-old Jayant Goyat, who has made headlines with an impressive performance for Services in the Ranji Trophy. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches, the young pacer claimed his maiden five-wicket haul against Delhi, helping his team restrict the opposition’s first-innings lead to 78 runs.
Goyat delivered an impressive bowling performance on the third day of the Ranji Trophy match at the Palam ground in New Delhi on November 4. He finished with figures of 5 wickets for 65 runs in 23.4 overs, registering an important milestone in his first-class career.
His performance helped Services bowl Delhi out for 344. The five-wicket haul included important dismissals of Yash Dhull, Anuj Rawat, Sumit Mathur, Dev Lakra and Navdeep Saini.
For the young fast bowler, the achievement was particularly special because it came after a difficult phase in his cricketing journey, when he had even considered quitting the sport.
Jayant Goyat’s Maiden Five-Wicket Haul Against Delhi
Goyat produced his career-best bowling performance during the ongoing Ranji Trophy encounter against Delhi. His height and ability to generate bounce made him an important part of the Services bowling attack.
He bowled with discipline and made effective use of the conditions at the Palam ground. Although the pitch was relatively slow and dry, Goyat continued to put pressure on the Delhi batters.
One of his important breakthroughs was the dismissal of Sumit Mathur, who missed his century by just one run after scoring 99. Goyat also removed several other key batters to help Services restrict Delhi’s total to 344.
Speaking after the achievement, Goyat said that taking wickets in the longer format gives him a special feeling. He explained that the pitch was dry and slow, which required additional effort from the bowlers.
The five-wicket haul marked a significant step forward for the 21-year-old, who is still developing his skills at the first-class level.
Who Is Jayant Goyat?
Jayant Goyat belongs to Bhiwani in Haryana, a city widely recognised for producing talented boxers and other sportspersons.
Born on June 24, 2005, Goyat is a right-arm fast-medium bowler who represents Services in domestic cricket. At 6 feet 4 inches, he possesses the physical attributes that can help him generate bounce and trouble batters.
Cricket also runs in his family. His father, Wazir Singh Goyat, was part of the Haryana Ranji Trophy squad and has experience as a fast bowler. He currently works as a physical education professor at a government college in Bhiwani.
His father was also his first cricket coach and played an important role in shaping his early career.
However, Goyat has said that his father never forced him to choose cricket. Instead, he allowed him to pursue his interests and supported his decision to become a professional cricketer.
Represented India Under-19 Team
Before establishing himself in domestic cricket, Goyat represented India Under-19 in a Quadrangular series in 2023.
He was also named as a backup player for India’s Under-19 World Cup squad in 2024. His performances at the junior level attracted attention, particularly his batting abilities.
Interestingly, Goyat was initially more focused on batting than bowling. During an Under-19 Challenger Trophy quarter-final, he scored an impressive 129 runs while chasing a target.
He generally batted in the top three during his early cricketing career and gradually developed into a pace-bowling all-rounder.
His transition from a batter to a bowling all-rounder required considerable work on fitness, conditioning and bowling technique.
According to Goyat, he had recorded a bowling speed of around 135 kmph when he last checked the speed gun during his Under-19 days.
Once Considered Quitting Cricket
Despite his recent success, Goyat’s journey has not been easy. He revealed that around two years ago, he seriously considered leaving cricket after struggling with his performances in Haryana’s district-level tournaments.
During one match, after failing to perform in three or four consecutive games, he even sent a message to his father saying that he wanted to quit cricket.
His father played an important role in helping him overcome that difficult period. Instead of putting additional pressure on him, Wazir Singh encouraged his son and motivated him to continue playing.
Goyat recalled how his father supported him by preparing his favourite food and helping him regain confidence.
That encouragement eventually helped him return to the field and continue working towards his cricketing ambitions.
Jayant Goyat Is Also Serving in the Indian Air Force
Another interesting aspect of Goyat’s journey is his association with the Indian Air Force.
The young cricketer was recruited under the Agnipath scheme and is currently serving in the Air Force while continuing his domestic cricket career for Services.
He also welcomed the government’s revised Second Tour of Duty arrangement, saying that the additional service opportunity could help Agniveers develop their careers.
Balancing professional cricket with military responsibilities makes his journey particularly interesting.
Services Coach Sees Potential in the Young Fast Bowler
Services coach Lieutenant Colonel AP Singh has expressed confidence in Goyat’s abilities and believes the youngster has considerable potential.
The coach highlighted his age, talent and recent bowling performances while stressing the importance of developing variations and gaining more experience in competitive cricket.
Goyat also brings additional value to the team through his batting abilities. The Services management believes that his contribution with the bat lower down the order can provide greater balance to the playing XI.
Goyat Wants to Continue Playing Red-Ball Cricket
Following his maiden five-wicket haul, Goyat also expressed his strong preference for Test and red-ball cricket.
He described the longer format as the toughest form of the game because it tests a player’s patience, consistency and skills over several days.
According to him, red-ball cricket remains extremely important despite the growing popularity of T20 leagues and shorter formats.
With his maiden five-wicket haul against Delhi, Jayant Goyat has taken an important step in his domestic cricket career. At just 21 years of age, the 6-foot-4-inch fast bowler will now look to build on this performance and establish himself as a consistent performer for Services.
His journey from considering quitting cricket to delivering a career-best bowling performance is an example of how patience, family support and determination can help a young sportsperson overcome difficult phases.
