26 October 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has informed Joburg Super Kings that he will not be available for the upcoming SA20 2027 season, following his appointment as head coach of Mumbai Indians for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season.
The development comes just a day after Mumbai Indians officially announced Pollard’s promotion from batting coach to head coach on October 24. The 39-year-old communicated his decision to the Johannesburg-based franchise after taking on the new responsibility with the five-time IPL champions.
Joburg Super Kings, a franchise associated with the Chennai Super Kings group, had secured Pollard at the SA20 auction held on October 7 for R1.5 million. However, the team will now have to find a replacement ahead of the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from January 17 to February 21, 2027.
Joburg Super Kings Confirm Pollard’s Decision
Chennai Super Kings chief executive officer Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that Pollard had informed the franchise about his unavailability for the upcoming competition.
“He has conveyed to us that he will not be able to play for Joburg Super Kings. We will now look for a replacement,” Viswanathan said, as reported by Cricbuzz.
The franchise will now assess its options as it prepares for the fifth season of the South African T20 league. Pollard’s withdrawal means Joburg Super Kings must reconsider their plans for the middle order and identify a suitable replacement before the tournament begins.
Mumbai Indians Appoint Pollard as Head Coach
Pollard’s decision follows a significant change in his role within the Mumbai Indians setup. The former West Indies international has been appointed head coach for IPL 2027, replacing Mahela Jayawardene.
Pollard spent several seasons playing for Mumbai Indians before transitioning into coaching. He joined the franchise in 2010 and represented the team until 2022, contributing to five IPL title-winning campaigns. After retiring from the IPL as a player, he continued working with the franchise as batting coach.
His elevation to head coach marks a new chapter in his association with Mumbai Indians. The franchise will look to draw on his experience, understanding of T20 cricket and familiarity with its players and team culture as it prepares for the next IPL season.
An Interesting Franchise Connection
Pollard’s withdrawal has attracted attention because Joburg Super Kings and Mumbai Indians belong to rival franchise groups that also operate teams in the SA20 competition.
Joburg Super Kings is associated with Chennai Super Kings, while Mumbai Indians’ owners operate MI Cape Town in South Africa. Pollard has previously represented MI Cape Town, alongside other Mumbai Indians-owned teams in international franchise leagues.
Despite the overlapping ownership interests, Mumbai Indians management had indicated that it had not instructed Pollard to withdraw from playing for another franchise. A source from the Mumbai Indians setup told Cricbuzz that the decision was Pollard’s to make.
His decision therefore appears to reflect his own choice following his appointment to the Mumbai Indians coaching role, rather than a publicly confirmed directive from the franchise.
Why MI Cape Town Did Not Sign Pollard
At the SA20 auction earlier this month, Joburg Super Kings purchased Pollard for R1.5 million. MI Cape Town, meanwhile, secured West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer for the same amount.
Both players are capable of performing middle-order roles, and the auction sequence influenced MI Cape Town’s decision. A source explained that the franchise could not wait for Pollard to come up for bidding after securing Hetmyer, as there was no guarantee another team would not compete for Pollard.
Pollard’s selection by Joburg Super Kings consequently marked his entry into a Super Kings franchise for the first time.
Joburg Super Kings Prepare for SA20 2027
The fifth season of SA20 is scheduled to run from January 17 to February 21, 2027. With Pollard no longer available, Joburg Super Kings will need to identify a replacement who can contribute to the team’s batting plans and overall squad balance.
The franchise has not yet announced the name of a replacement. Further developments are expected as teams finalise their preparations for the tournament.
Pollard’s move into the Mumbai Indians head coach role adds a new dimension to his career in franchise cricket. For Joburg Super Kings, the immediate priority will be to fill the vacancy and ensure the squad remains prepared for the upcoming SA20 campaign.
