23 October 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  :   India continued its impressive campaign at the Asian Para Games 2026 as the country crossed the 100-medal mark and celebrated a world-record performance in the men’s 400m T64 event. The achievements highlighted the Indian contingent’s strong showing across para-athletics and other sporting disciplines at the continental competition in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The 2026 Asian Para Games have brought together para-athletes from across Asia, with competitors representing their countries in athletics, archery, swimming, badminton, shooting and several other sports. India entered the latest phase of the competition with a growing medal tally and the goal of surpassing its previous best performance.

According to reports published after Thursday’s events, India had accumulated 88 medals by the end of the previous day, including 21 gold, 26 silver and 41 bronze medals. The contingent’s latest performances pushed it beyond the 100-medal milestone, marking an important achievement in the campaign.

The men’s 400m T64 event emerged as one of the headline moments, with India recording a world-record performance. The result underlined the high level of competition in para-athletics and added another significant achievement to India’s growing collection of performances at the Games. The T64 classification is used in para-athletics for athletes with lower-limb impairments who compete using a running prosthesis or meet the classification’s relevant eligibility criteria.

India’s progress has been supported by performances across track and field, archery and swimming. Para-athletics has been a major contributor to the medal count, with Indian athletes winning gold, silver and bronze medals in track events, jumping competitions and throwing disciplines.

Archer Sheetal Devi was among the standout performers in the earlier events, winning two gold medals in the women’s individual compound competition and the compound mixed team event alongside Toman Kumar. Their mixed-team victory came against Indonesia, while Sheetal’s individual title further strengthened India’s presence in para-archery.

India also achieved a podium sweep in the men’s high jump T63 event. Shailesh Kumar won gold with a Games-record jump of 1.89 metres, while Varun Singh Bhati secured silver after clearing 1.84 metres. Rahul completed the all-Indian podium with a jump of 1.81 metres.

Other notable performances included Suvarna Raj’s gold medal in the women’s discus throw F54, Anjanaben Bumbadiya’s victory in the women’s 400m T47 and Dilip Mahadu Gavit’s gold in the men’s 400m T47. Solairaj Dharmaraj also won gold in the men’s long jump T44/T62/T64, recording an Asian record of 7.15 metres.

The medal-winning performances have helped India remain among the leading nations in the overall standings. China has continued to lead the competition, while India’s expanding medal tally reflects contributions from athletes competing in multiple disciplines.

Crossing 100 medals is a significant milestone for the Indian contingent, which has been aiming to build on its performance at the previous Asian Para Games in Hangzhou in 2023. India finished that edition with 111 medals, including 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze medals.

The current campaign has also highlighted achievements beyond the medal count, including record-breaking results and historic firsts for Indian athletes in specific events. Swati Chaudhary, for example, won India’s first medal in the women’s W1 individual para-archery event, securing silver after a closely contested final against China’s Mengkan Cen.

With competition continuing, India will look to add further medals and improve its overall position before the Games conclude. The world-record performance in the men’s 400m T64 and the crossing of the 100-medal mark have provided further highlights in a campaign featuring strong performances from Indian para-athletes.
