19 October 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Muhammad Sarwar, a senior figure associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) who was designated a global terrorist by the United States in 2016, has died in Lahore, Pakistan. Sarwar was serving as the Punjab president of Pakistan Markazi Muslim League (PMML) at the time of his death, according to a party spokesperson and media reports published on October 18 and 19, 2026.
A PMML spokesperson said Sarwar collapsed while travelling from his home to a mosque to offer prayers on Sunday. The party did not disclose a confirmed cause of death. However, Pakistani media reports suggested that he may have sustained a fatal head injury after falling down stairs. The circumstances surrounding his death have not been independently established.
Sarwar’s Role in Lashkar-e-Taiba
The US Department of the Treasury designated Sarwar and fellow LeT figure Shahid Mahmood as Specially Designated Global Terrorists on December 28, 2016. The department said the action targeted the group’s fundraising and financial support networks.
According to the Treasury Department, Sarwar had held senior positions within LeT for more than a decade and served as the group’s Lahore chief from at least January 2015. US authorities said he was involved in fundraising and transferring money on behalf of the organisation, including soliciting donations from businesspeople.
At the time of his death, Sarwar was also leading PMML’s Punjab chapter. The party has been described in media reports as a political offshoot of Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the organisation associated with Hafiz Saeed, who has been imprisoned in Lahore in connection with terror-financing convictions.
Cause of Death Remains Unconfirmed
The circumstances of Sarwar’s death remain unclear. While the PMML spokesperson said he collapsed on his way to the mosque, local media reported that he may have suffered a head injury after falling down stairs.
There has been no confirmed official account establishing precisely how the incident occurred. Reports describing the death as mysterious should therefore be treated with caution until further information becomes available.
Sarwar’s funeral was scheduled to take place at Jamia Al-Qadsia, the Jamaat-ud-Dawa headquarters in Lahore’s Chuburji area, late on Sunday night, according to media reports.
His death brings to an end the career of a figure whom US authorities had identified as a senior LeT leader involved in fundraising. The precise circumstances of his final hours, however, remain unresolved in the publicly available reporting.
