14 October 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  : Kimberly Guilfoyle has confirmed that she is leaving her position as the United States ambassador to Greece after the White House asked her to resign. Guilfoyle has denied allegations of misconduct, describing them as false and saying she intends to defend her reputation.

The announcement followed a statement by White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia on Tuesday, October 13, confirming that the administration had asked Guilfoyle to step down. The development came after reports raised questions about her conduct before and during her diplomatic assignment in Athens.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Guilfoyle described serving as ambassador as the honour of a lifetime. She expressed appreciation for the people of Greece and reaffirmed her support for US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Addressing the allegations directly, Guilfoyle said they were false and that she would vigorously defend her name, reputation and integrity. She also referred to her decades of public service, stating that she would not allow the accusations to define her professional record.

White House confirms request to resign

The White House confirmed Guilfoyle’s departure after the allegations attracted increasing attention. Zacharia told reporters that the administration had asked the ambassador to resign and wished her well.

Trump had previously indicated that he was unhappy with the reports about Guilfoyle’s alleged conduct. Speaking to reporters, he said the administration did not like what it had been reading. Guilfoyle announced her decision shortly after the White House confirmed the request.

Guilfoyle, a former television personality and prosecutor, was appointed to represent the United States in Greece during Trump’s administration. Her role involved promoting American diplomatic and economic interests, including cooperation on energy and regional security.

Reports raise questions about alleged conduct

The controversy intensified following a series of reports by The Wall Street Journal concerning Guilfoyle’s interactions with political donors, Greek business figures and people connected to the energy sector.

One of the most prominent allegations concerned an alleged request to Republican donor Eric Deters for help paying a credit-card bill of approximately $100,000. Reports said messages discussed financial assistance and possible access to officials in the Trump administration. Deters reportedly did not make the payment.

Other reports raised questions about gifts and services, travel on private aircraft, and Guilfoyle’s alleged relationship with a lobbyist connected to a Greek energy company. Some accounts also alleged that she promoted the company’s interests during diplomatic activities. These remain allegations reported by news organisations, not findings that establish wrongdoing.

Guilfoyle’s legal representatives have disputed claims of improper conduct. They have argued that money discussed with Deters related to previously arranged public appearances and speaking engagements, rather than an attempt to exchange official influence for personal financial benefits. Her lawyers have also rejected allegations concerning her travel, saying she followed relevant State Department guidance and regulations.

Diplomatic role ends amid controversy

Guilfoyle’s departure comes after a high-profile tenure in Athens, where she promoted US energy interests and participated in diplomatic engagements. Her work included efforts to strengthen cooperation between Washington and Athens, an important relationship for NATO and regional security in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The allegations have also drawn attention from US lawmakers, some of whom have called for further scrutiny. Reports have indicated that questions about her conduct may be examined by oversight authorities, although the precise status and findings of any investigation should be distinguished from the allegations themselves.

Guilfoyle has maintained that the accusations are untrue and reiterated her loyalty to Trump and his administration. Her exit marks the end of her tenure as the US representative in Greece, while questions surrounding the reported allegations remain a subject of public and political attention.

No allegation should be treated as proven solely because it has been reported. Guilfoyle has denied wrongdoing, and the claims should be assessed on the basis of verified evidence and any findings from relevant investigations.
