14 September 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Cristiano Ronaldo has called for lifetime stadium bans for fans who appeared to taunt Portugal and Al-Hilal midfielder Rúben Neves with chants referencing his late friend and former teammate Diogo Jota during a Saudi Pro League match.
The incident occurred during Al-Taawoun’s match against Al-Hilal in Buraidah, where footage circulated on social media appeared to show sections of the home crowd chanting Jota’s name at Neves.
Ronaldo Condemns Fan Behaviour
Ronaldo, who played alongside both Neves and Jota for Portugal, strongly condemned the incident.
He called on the Saudi Pro League to take action against the supporters involved, arguing that behaviour of this nature crosses the boundaries of football rivalry and should result in serious punishment.
The Al-Nassr forward said fans responsible should never be allowed to enter a stadium again, effectively calling for lifetime bans.
Neves Visibly Affected
Neves appeared visibly upset by the chants during the match.
The Portuguese midfielder responded by pointing toward the sky and then toward the section from which the chants appeared to come. After the game, he expressed his anger at the incident while referring to the significance of Jota’s memory.
Close Friendship With Jota
The chants were particularly sensitive because of the close relationship between Neves and Jota.
The two played together for both club and country and were close friends. Neves was also among those who carried Jota’s coffin at his funeral after the Portuguese forward died in a car crash in July 2025.
Jota died alongside his brother André Silva in the crash in Zamora, Spain.
Incident Overshadows Al-Hilal’s Big Win
The controversy came during a match in which Al-Hilal won 6-0 against Al-Taawoun.
Despite the emphatic result, the chants became the major talking point after the final whistle because of their reference to a deceased player and Neves’ personal connection to him.
Clubs Condemn the Chants
Both Al-Hilal and Al-Taawoun condemned the behaviour.
Al-Hilal reportedly filed a formal complaint with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), calling for action against those responsible. Al-Taawoun also said it would cooperate with authorities investigating the incident.
Saudi Football Authorities Respond
The SAFF and Saudi Pro League also issued a joint condemnation, saying that exploiting personal tragedies to provoke players is unacceptable.
Authorities said an investigation was underway and that appropriate action would be taken against offenders.
