25 Aug 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  : Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has joined HBO’s Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart, replacing Nicholas Hoult in the role for Season 2. Hoult has exited the project because of scheduling conflicts.

Kit Harington Takes Over as Lockhart

Harington will play the flamboyant and self-important wizard Gilderoy Lockhart, who becomes Hogwarts’ Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in the second story, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The character was previously played by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation.

Why Nicholas Hoult Left

Hoult had been announced for the role earlier in August but has now departed because the production schedule conflicted with his other commitments.

Reports say the scheduling issues involved his existing projects, making it difficult for HBO to accommodate his availability.

Harington Already Knows the Character

Interestingly, this is not Harington’s first time playing Lockhart.

The actor previously voiced Gilderoy Lockhart in the official full-cast Harry Potter audiobook adaptation released in 2025. His familiarity with the character gives him an unusual connection to the role before taking it on in live action.

Season 2 Will Adapt Chamber of Secrets

The HBO series is designed to adapt one of J.K. Rowling’s books each season.

Season 1 will cover Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, while Season 2 is expected to follow Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, bringing Lockhart into the story.

A Different Lockhart for Fans

Lockhart is known for his charming public image, exaggerated claims of heroic achievements and enormous ego, despite being far less capable than his reputation suggests.

Harington’s casting could give the character a noticeably different screen presence from Branagh’s earlier portrayal.

Harry Potter Season 1 Nears Release

The first season of HBO’s Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026.

The cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, alongside John Lithgow as Dumbledore and Janet McTeer as McGonagall.

Harington Returns to HBO

The casting also reunites Harington with HBO, the network behind Game of Thrones, where he became globally known for playing Jon Snow.

His move from Westeros to Hogwarts adds another high-profile connection between two of HBO’s biggest fantasy franchises.

What Happens Next

Season 2 is expected to enter production later in 2026, with Harington taking over Lockhart after Hoult’s departure.

For fans, the recasting means the much-anticipated character will now have a completely new live-action interpretation when the story reaches Hogwarts’ second year.
